John Carter. I went to the theater expecting to see a sort-of Conan the Barbarian in space testosterone-fest, but ended up with a world-hopping adventure with interesting characters, a decent plot and good effects. It was a really good movie, not the best ever, but good.

I will never understand the hate it gets. Scorn for the poor marketing and advertising that lead to it's flop, sure, but the movie itself doesn't deserve the hate it's gotten.

Book was better and all that. Also book had a lot more implied naked.

Are the sequels any good, or is the first book the only one worth reading?

I only read the first one and the first sequel, so I honestly couldn't tell you. I think the first book was the best, but again, limited exposure.

It's one of those movie industry things where studio politics screwed it over. Essentially, there was a change at the top of some kind at the studio that it was putting it out, and it was in the interest of the people at the top that the movie not do well, because it wasn't their project, it was the project of the guy who came before them. So it was essentially self-sabotage.
