Re: British TV fans unite!

I love British TV because I am British and it accounts for about 95% of the things I watch.

I can't really compare it to non-UK TV because all I ever really see are the big US dramas which are probably not that representative of the majority of US TV (?). I can understand how annoying the 'British Brevity' thing is though!

Just out of interest I'm posting the top 20 TV shows watched here last week, I wonder how many of them are known elsewhere is the world?

Top 20 Programmes, 25/2/2013 - 3/3/2013

2. Coronation Street - 10.26 million

Is Pointless Celebrities a celebrity version of Pointless? And if so, has anybody good been on it?

I pwn that show. At least from the couch.

Yes it is. I'm not really sure who's been on it though because I always seem to miss it. I do know that there's a Doctor Who special coming up though.

Call The Midwife, Coronation Street, Eastenders, Emmerdale, Top Gear, Casualty, and Holby City are all shown/have been shown on our TV, like most of the BBC dramas.

Cool. I love the soaps in an utterly honest and unironic way, I'm glad they are spreading across the seas :)

1 through 4 all air in the Canadian market on either CBC or basic cable stations, although Call the Midwife only just started airing in the US on PBS "border stations" (that are essentially funded more by Canadians than the Americans who run the channels), #11 will be starting on PBS soon. #5 is my personal must-always-watch show (I hate flying and want tips on how to survive LOL), although they redub the narrator when it airs on the science channel here. I prefer the Brit narrator for Mayday, but my cable provider doesn't carry the National Geographic channel.

The thing I found really odd about UK TV (sorry tele) other than the lack of variety/quantity of channels, was just how many talking heads there were. People sitting on couches yakking away? Not my thing at all. But THAT WAS ALL THERE WAS. One night I couldn't sleep and literally the ONLY thing on besides the talking heads was Kingdom of Heaven. So I ended up watching the Crusades in that quasi-fugue state only severe insomnia brings on...and it was still better than the talking heads or the off-air signals....

The other really strange thing is how many people watch the same thing, so there's a million people who can all talk about the same show they saw last night with complete strangers the next day. With a few exceptions (and definitely not anymore with the 500-channel universe) that would be nearly impossible, in North America.

This particular instance of Mayday was a crime drama, I don't actually think I've heard of the show you're talking about but it wouldn't be something I'd seek out so it's possibly just passed me by.

I can't say I've ever noticed the number of talking heads either but now that you mention it, I guess it is true that we do that a fair bit. Cheap I imagine, that's usually what it boils down to!

I love the fact that I can go into work and almost always find someone who watched the same as me last night. Makes it all feel like more of a communal experience wthout the hassle of actually sitting with someone to watch.
