British TV fans unite!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-11 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
What British shows are your favorites, and why do you like British TV in particular so much? Try not be snooty or bash other countries' media plz.

Sherlock and QI. And whatever my mom forces me to watch at the time (she likes all the British shows). Doctor Who, though I have only watched Nine and Ten.

I am so digging Ripper Street.

Though British shows tick me off for one important reason. Their series are way too short. Come on. It's hard to get really epic story arcs in a British series like you can say with an American one because there isn't the space. Like I would love a few episodes of Sherlock just giving us back story of all the characters. (Like what were the Holmes brothers like as kids? And what made them so detached?) It can even be frustrating knowing that you are never going to get those type of questions answered because, again, there just isn't space.

BUCKET RESIDENCE, LADY OF THE HOUSE SPEAKING

Also Monty Python and Sherlock, and I've been meaning to start watching Blackadder.

I don't prefer British TV over American TV, or vice versa, but I like to mix up the comedy I watch with British humour. It's different and makes for a good change now and again.

I love British TV because I am British and it accounts for about 95% of the things I watch.

I can't really compare it to non-UK TV because all I ever really see are the big US dramas which are probably not that representative of the majority of US TV (?). I can understand how annoying the 'British Brevity' thing is though!

Just out of interest I'm posting the top 20 TV shows watched here last week, I wonder how many of them are known elsewhere is the world?

Top 20 Programmes, 25/2/2013 - 3/3/2013

Is Pointless Celebrities a celebrity version of Pointless? And if so, has anybody good been on it?

I pwn that show. At least from the couch.

Call The Midwife, Coronation Street, Eastenders, Emmerdale, Top Gear, Casualty, and Holby City are all shown/have been shown on our TV, like most of the BBC dramas.

1 through 4 all air in the Canadian market on either CBC or basic cable stations, although Call the Midwife only just started airing in the US on PBS "border stations" (that are essentially funded more by Canadians than the Americans who run the channels), #11 will be starting on PBS soon. #5 is my personal must-always-watch show (I hate flying and want tips on how to survive LOL), although they redub the narrator when it airs on the science channel here. I prefer the Brit narrator for Mayday, but my cable provider doesn't carry the National Geographic channel.

The thing I found really odd about UK TV (sorry tele) other than the lack of variety/quantity of channels, was just how many talking heads there were. People sitting on couches yakking away? Not my thing at all. But THAT WAS ALL THERE WAS. One night I couldn't sleep and literally the ONLY thing on besides the talking heads was Kingdom of Heaven. So I ended up watching the Crusades in that quasi-fugue state only severe insomnia brings on...and it was still better than the talking heads or the off-air signals....

The other really strange thing is how many people watch the same thing, so there's a million people who can all talk about the same show they saw last night with complete strangers the next day. With a few exceptions (and definitely not anymore with the 500-channel universe) that would be nearly impossible, in North America.

Top Gear, Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, Primeval, Sherlock. There are quite a few, but I don't want to name everything.

And I like it mainly because it's what I grew up with (as I am British) :)

Got all night? Miranda, Ab Fab, Inspector Lynley, The IT Crowd, Father Ted, Black Books, Jam and Jerusalem, Midsomer Murders (in all its awfulness), Lewis, Morse, Rosemary & Thyme (in all its genius!), Dinnerladies, Spaced, A Touch of Frost, A Touch of Cloth. My new favourite is Last Tango in Halifax, which is almost flawless.

Partly it's just what I grew up with. But I also think - generalising wildly - British TV is often better for showing women with a diversity of body types and with a more natural approach to hair and make-up. I can think about how much I want to be those characters without the immediate follow-up of hating my own body.

Last Tango in Halifax high five!! Glad it's going to get a second series.

Lovejoy, Blackadder, QI, Heartbeat, Jeeves and Wooster, Not the Nine O'Clock News, Red Dwarf, Benny Hill Show, Keeping Up Appearances, Absolutely Fabulous...etc. etc. I'd say that 80 % of my favorites are British shows. The quality of acting and writing is most of the time awesome, I like their sense of humor, and how they aren't dumbed down or filled with pretty people who can only master three facial expressions.

Sherlock, Being Human (;_;), Luther, Doctor Who, Merlin (double ;_;), Spaced, watched Skins for a couple seasons/series, enjoyed that...

Oh, and Whitechapel. Probably some others I can't think of.

I'm more likely to watch what I hear a lot about, so most the British series I've seen are pretty popular and more recent.

There's only two shows total that I watch, one is the Mentalist and the other is Top Gear. They're the only shows I still have interest in.

I believe they've mostly already been mentioned but here are my favorites:

Monty Python's Flying Circus, Fawlty Towers, Jeeves and Wooster, Absolutely Fabulous, Black Adder, Little Britain, All Creatures Great And Small, Red Dwarf.

I was raised on a steady diet of British television despite being Canadian myself.

Anyone else here really love British cooking shows or British celebrity chefs?

I'm talking: Two Fat Ladies, Nigella (anything- the woman is a goddess), Jaime Oliver(anything except School Dinners), any of the Brit versions of Gordon Ramsay's shows, Heston's Feasts... It's all so awesome.

I also unashamedly love the original Brit version of Come Dine with me even though it was an absolutely terrible reality show. Anything that features Welsh people yelling at each other in Cymric is automatically hilarious in my book.

Doctor Who, Sherlock, Downton Abbey, Wire in the Blood.

I like how British actors (compared to the actors in American shows) aren't all exceptionally attractive, but tend to look more like ordinary people. I might also find it easier to relate to British TV, since British culture is more similar to Swedish culture than American culture is.
