British TV fans unite!

Re: British TV fans unite!
Though British shows tick me off for one important reason. Their series are way too short. Come on. It's hard to get really epic story arcs in a British series like you can say with an American one because there isn't the space. Like I would love a few episodes of Sherlock just giving us back story of all the characters. (Like what were the Holmes brothers like as kids? And what made them so detached?) It can even be frustrating knowing that you are never going to get those type of questions answered because, again, there just isn't space.
Re: British TV fans unite!
Also Monty Python and Sherlock, and I've been meaning to start watching Blackadder.
I don't prefer British TV over American TV, or vice versa, but I like to mix up the comedy I watch with British humour. It's different and makes for a good change now and again.
Re: British TV fans unite!
I also loved Are You Being Served?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 12:00 am (UTC)(link)I can't really compare it to non-UK TV because all I ever really see are the big US dramas which are probably not that representative of the majority of US TV (?). I can understand how annoying the 'British Brevity' thing is though!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 01:11 am (UTC)(link)The thing I found really odd about UK TV (sorry tele) other than the lack of variety/quantity of channels, was just how many talking heads there were. People sitting on couches yakking away? Not my thing at all. But THAT WAS ALL THERE WAS. One night I couldn't sleep and literally the ONLY thing on besides the talking heads was Kingdom of Heaven. So I ended up watching the Crusades in that quasi-fugue state only severe insomnia brings on...and it was still better than the talking heads or the off-air signals....
The other really strange thing is how many people watch the same thing, so there's a million people who can all talk about the same show they saw last night with complete strangers the next day. With a few exceptions (and definitely not anymore with the 500-channel universe) that would be nearly impossible, in North America.

And I like it mainly because it's what I grew up with (as I am British) :)
Re: British TV fans unite!
Partly it's just what I grew up with. But I also think - generalising wildly - British TV is often better for showing women with a diversity of body types and with a more natural approach to hair and make-up. I can think about how much I want to be those characters without the immediate follow-up of hating my own body.

Oh, and Whitechapel. Probably some others I can't think of.
I'm more likely to watch what I hear a lot about, so most the British series I've seen are pretty popular and more recent.

I was raised on a steady diet of British television despite being Canadian myself.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 03:32 am (UTC)(link)I'm talking: Two Fat Ladies, Nigella (anything- the woman is a goddess), Jaime Oliver(anything except School Dinners), any of the Brit versions of Gordon Ramsay's shows, Heston's Feasts... It's all so awesome.
I also unashamedly love the original Brit version of Come Dine with me even though it was an absolutely terrible reality show. Anything that features Welsh people yelling at each other in Cymric is automatically hilarious in my book.
Re: British TV fans unite!
I like how British actors (compared to the actors in American shows) aren't all exceptionally attractive, but tend to look more like ordinary people. I might also find it easier to relate to British TV, since British culture is more similar to Swedish culture than American culture is.
