No, I definitely think we can conclude from the work Gisele has done afterwards that she's definitely really good at making nuanced characters and writing compelling plots that aren't just idiotic excuses for fanservice. She definitely had a lot of impact on the comic.

[/sarcasm if that wasn't clear]

*snerk* I find M3 to be sorta funny, on occasion, if I don't think too hard about it, but yeeeeeah, her gift is drawing, not writing. Although, if you're going to try to realistically write teenage characters, having the input of a very immature person can't hurt.

I love this comment and want to steal it away from its boyfriend by seducing said boyfriend myself.

When I think about the plots in retrospect there actually was some really interesting stuff post Popsicle Wars. But the art was so dire though. The characters all suddenly became these weird dead-eyed mannequins.

Maybe that's unfair. The art probably works for some people. I just found it incredibly off-putting.

People think Gisele was a good writer?

... Have they seen her work?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea why I keep reading Menage a 3. I think I'm under some sort of curse.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Penny and Aggie NEVER had good writing. It's on par with trash-TV. But it's fun. That said, it sucked after Gisele left 'cause that other guy's art sucked. Stiff, ugly fashion and all the girls had clown lips.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
yeah

it went from crappy comedy/archie-comic rip-off to crappy teen melodrama, but it was crappy aaalll the way

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
the lips looked glued on, it was weird!
I think the artist has potential though, like Gisele was NOT that great at the begining and really evolved as time went on.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Penny and Aggie was ALWAYS great. It's all you losers who'd rather read scribbles about trolls in MS Paint, or Gary Stus who fuck a different woman every night and treat their friends like shit, who need to get some taste.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, no. It's losers like you who read lame webcomics instead of real comics from prestigious publishers like Drawn & Quarterly and Fantagraphics. See what I did there?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
you need to read more comics if you think those are all the options out there o_o

I do, in fact, read Gunnerkrigg Court and Hark! A Vagrant, and did read Girly. And a whole variety of other webcomics besides. And guess what? I'm still allowed to state publicly that Penny and Aggie is one of the finest examples of webcomic writing, and that it should've had far more readers than Homestuck or Least I Could Do.

But hey, thanks for assuming I'm some kind of n00b who only discovered yesterday that there are comics on the Internet.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
No one's saying that you can't say Penny and Aggie is great. You're allowed to say it. You're wrong, I think, but you're allowed to say it. What an indictment of webcomic writing that would be if Penny and Aggie was one of the finest examples.

And saying that Penny and Aggie is better than / deserves more readers than Least I Could Do is pretty meaningless, because Least I Could Do is abjectly terrible. So, yes, Penny and Aggie is better than LICD but that really is not saying very much as so are 90% of all webcomics.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
How does an already shitty thing jump the shark? By getting shittier?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Penny and Aggie was good up until I realized that even with all the girl/girl teasing and lezzing it up, there wasn't going to be any tits, pussies or scissoring. Gisele would of at least given us that.

Actually, none of Gisele's comics have women's genitalia in them, although she apparently did a few such pinups for the pay webcomics site Slipshine.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, Penny and Aggie was all right. What really did in Campbell's reputation was the spinoff, QUILTBAG, which featured two of the original series' most polarizing characters, and lazily filled out most of the rest of the cast with reader-based cardboard cutouts. The latter in turn caused most of the forum discussion to consist of people, who apparently had no lives of their own, constantly pointing out, "See that character? That's me! Oh yeah, and also I am that character, and did I mention that character was me?" The most pathetic was when two or three fans vied with each other for the claim to be Ronnie, the comic's least sympathetic character, a morbidly obese sad sack who goes around misinterpeting everyone's innocuous remarks as personal attacks until he finally punches someone out.

And then there was the incident in which Campbell not only revealed he'd had no idea that "tranny" was an offensive term, but went on for two days basically saying, "All right, I'll change it to 'trans,' but I don't see why you people are being all P.C. about it; leave me alone." Only after various readers announced they were quitting, the most active (and usually pathetically sucking-up) forum member called him out, and his name instantly became synonymous on Tumblr with transphobia, did he finally realize he'd fucked up royally and apologize. But by then it was too late. Dude, when the second Google search result for "QUILTBAG webcomic," to this very day, says "not recommended" in its title, you've failed in your mission to write about the lives of LGBT people. The surprise wasn't that he eventually cancelled the comic, but that he didn't do it that very week.

There's also such a thing as forgiveness for making mistakes...

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
...But I wouldn't expect you Tumblr SJWs to practice that. So much more comforting to paint T as OMG EBIL 4EVA because, as he clearly explained, he'd had a terrible few nights' sleep from travelling and wasn't at his best. And then fucking apologized.

So much more supportive of your tiny insular "victim" worldview for you SJWs to drag a GOOD WRITER'S reputation through the dirt. Never mind that at least a few of the comic's trans readers were perfectly willing to forgive them. So much better to be outraged on their behalf so you can be a "good ally."

Fucking Tumblr. Hope it goes the way of the dodo like LJ did.

Re: There's also such a thing as forgiveness for making mistakes...

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, whoa. Way to assume, buddy. I don't have a Tumblr, SJW or otherwise. And I'm neither LGBT nor perpetually, professionally outraged on their behalf. I'm just saying, if someone's a straight, cis dude and intends to write a comic or whatever "about the QUILTBAG experience," then he'd be better off doing his damn research and knowing what is and isn't acceptable language to one or more of the populations within (trans, in this case). He'd also be better off not acting all butthurt when called on it, regardless of how much sleep the poor, delicate flower has or hasn't had. Just fix the mistake, apologize, promise to do better in the future, and move on.

And yeah, forgiveness is great, but it's understandable if some trans people or their allies maybe don't feel like watching a forum thread for days (because maybe they have other things to do with their time) just to see if the author eventually apologizes. That's not being a PC SJW OMFGWTFBBQ. That's just typical behaviour for anyone but blindly loyal fanbois who line up to lick their favourite creator's taint.
