I... wish you hadn't phrased it so that the woman is a reward for the man.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That's all women are to some people, a big wet medal that they wear around their dick.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you manage to take something as invasive as the patriarchy and sound whiny about it?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Practice, lots of practice.

Survival. If we don't make it as annoying as possible, somebody might actually absorb the message

Or babysitters for the Man-Child. That one really gets me. It's insulting to everyone involved.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
At least OP used quotes?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Yeah, but still the idea could've been expressed without using the word at all.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
... isn't that exactly what OP was objecting to? That the show frames it as if the woman is a prize, and OP doesn't like that? I did not get the sense that OP was expressing a personal opinion.

/not a viewer of the show, so maybe I'm missing something

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
This is what I thought. Or at least, I thought the implication was that the OP thinks the show is treating Bernadette as a prize. Not everyone would agree, I guess, but I kinda do. Especially considering that almost everything she does revolves around Howard somehow. She's Howard's girlfriend first, and her own person second. That's my impression, anyway. /does watch the show

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's how I read it too. Poor Bernie, she's the only thing about the show I still like, and she's hardly even her own character...

That's how I read the secret as well.

[personal profile] wauwy 2013-03-12 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You know that's what the writers were thinking though.
silverau: (Default)

[personal profile] silverau 2013-03-12 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I took it as OP criticizing that kind of attitude.
visp: (Default)

[personal profile] visp 2013-03-12 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
But it is how the show plays it.
yeahscience: (Default)

[personal profile] yeahscience 2013-03-13 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
That's the entire point OP is making, though. That's what the show did.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're missing the point. Phrasing it that way (with quotation marks, which should be a big tip off) is part of the OP's protest about how the show treats female characters. I get that people are sensitive about word usage but without taking context into consideration, discussions like this turn into the "OMG you said 'Jehovah!'" scene from Monty Python's Life of Brian.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Great, the rest of this thread is now just going to be people quoting Monty Python you know. Splitter!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
that's what the OP is protesting in the secret.

reading comprehension goddamn.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
But that's pretty much exactly what it is. Why flower it up?

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-03-13 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's pretty clear that that's the problem OP had - women SHOULDN'T be prizes for men but in this case that's what was written, and OP doesn't like it.
