Ships and attraction

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Secret #3 made me curious, do most people find attractiveness important when it comes to shipping? (Personally, I don't care about whether or not the characters are sufficiently pretty. If I think they have chemistry, I'll ship it.)

Short answer: Yes, yes I do.

I don't think they necessarily have to be attractive, nah.

I tend not to be interested in shipping characters I find actually unattractive, but I've liked ships of more neutral attractiveness. Something has to draw me to both of the characters, equally or not, and that something certainly doesn't have to be looks, but off the top of my head I can't recall a pairing I've been into where I found one of the characters flat-out unattractive.

Not really. Chemistry and personality is more important.

Seeing how my sister has mocked most of my ships because "they're just not that good-looking!"... no, I guess it's not a factor for me.

To some degree, yes. I have to find them attractive together, but not necessarily individually. And there's a lot of factors in that, most of which involve the way they interact.

Yes. BUT oftentimes fandom makes certain character hotter than they really are. So say, Bofur from The Hobbit. He is not hot to me at all, but the fandom interpretation of him is usually sex enough, so I can read fics with him.

Re: Ships and attraction

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. It's all about the chemistry for me.

Re: Ships and attraction

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
yes. But sometimes the personalities and chemistry of the characters will make an otherwise unattractive person suddenly attractive.

Re: Ships and attraction

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, attractiveness does not effect whether I ship it or not. However, it does effect if I actively look for sexy fanworks of them. If one or both characters in my ship is unattractive, I stick to SFW fanart and fanfic because NSFW doesn't interest me at that point.

With a few rare exceptions, I pretty much always am totally into at least one half of an OTP.

Re: Ships and attraction

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends. Live-action stuff, I generally don't have standards of attractiveness on shipping - human beings look like what they look like, and if they seem awesome together, then I'm shipping it. Maybe not as hardcore as something where I found the people physically attractive, but it certainly doesn't stop me from shipping anything. At least, not as far as I've experienced.

But animated stuff, a character's appearance very often corresponds to the character type, and the characters that have similar looks (and looks I like) tend to be the characters that act similar and in a way I like, and I end up shipping them. So...in a roundabout way, attractiveness does matter? But only because the characters I find cute visually are also characters whose personalities I enjoy.

Re: Ships and attraction

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. I don't see anything wrong with wanting the characters I read about, write about, visualize and look at art of looking attractive to me. Even if they aren't drop-dead gorgeous, they still need to be attractive to me for me to spend any energy on the ship.

I was gonna say no, but then I thought about it and realized I can't think of any of my OTP's over the years in which I haven't found at least one character attractive, so I wonder if it does influence me on some level. Then again, it's hard to find unattractive people in the media in the first place, and there aren't many characters in my main fandoms that I think are ugly, so maybe it's just a coincidence? Plus I have a ton of characters that didn't interest me with their appearance at first but after I started to like the character's personality it made me like their appearance more too. ...Now I'm rambling.

Overall I'd say shipping dynamic and character interactions are mostly what draw me to a ship, though.

I usually find characters I ship attractive, but it isn't a necessity. First and foremost I ship because the characters relationship fascinates me and/or I think they have great chemistry. There have been a few occasions where I've shipped because of hotness, but it isn't typical for me, and I'm not usually as passionate about those ships.

I actually often start finding characters more attractive after I start shipping them. Like, I might find a guy blah when I first watch a show or movie, but if I start really really shipping him with someone, he'll start to look less and less blah to me the harder I ship.

It's a bit of both for me. My main factor for shipping is chemistry but quite often I usually find one of the characters I ship to be physically attractive.

Yep. For me, they have to have the double-whammy of being physically attractive and having chemistry.

I do think that ultimately, the chemistry aspect matters more for me.

It definitely helped, but it's not a deal killer.

Like I ship Rodney McKay with a heck ton of people and he's not your average GQ cover model. Although, I think when the "attractiveness" bar lowers, the "insufferable genius" bar has to rise to compensate.

83% of my ships include insufferable geniuses. True story.

I think the best answer for me would be 'I can ship them as long as they aren't extremely unattractive to me'. Otherwise, they tend to be based more on chemistry than anything else.

I think it's very important and I won't ship something when I think one half of the pairing is ugly, but to me that's only because I don't usually read/write fic, my interest in shipping is pretty minimal... basically I only like looking at fanart sometimes, so I gotta find them aesthetically pleasing.

I've never thought of it as an important factor, but I can't say I've ever shipped people I didn't find attractive.

Re: Ships and attraction

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
No. I want them to have chemistry and/or interesting character dynamics.

I actually tend to love stories (shippy but also gen) about the characters that people in fandom ignore because they are ugly/old/whatever. I guess I just want everybody to be happy and loved, even if they are just fictional characters... XD

Re: Ships and attraction

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
If I find either of the characters really unattractive, I can't ship it, really. If I try I just sort of pity-ship it because I feel sorry for the unattractive character, and that doesn't seem good either.

So yes, attractiveness is important for shipping for me, or at least, lack of unattractiveness.
