I think it's less that it was unknown, and more that the concept of snarky, scoundrelish protagonists went into hibernation in big-budget Hollywood movies for a couple decades. I mean, you have plenty of characters like in classic Hollywood movies and film noir and screwball and all those sorts of things - it's only with the cowboy movies and the military movies and the big-budget blah stuff of the 60s, and then the grimness and seriousness of a lot of the 70s, that it doesn't exist so much.

So it's more of a renaissance than an innovation. And even then, you already had James Bond, who's as snarky and dickish as you like.
