taotrooper: A baby pegasus eating grapes (Fantasia / I brake for grape)

Yeah, I also felt disappointed about that. The kids just changed way too much and I thought their toddler personalities were more refreshing. Plus, I think it's even sadder that it all happened when they were 10-12. I know the movie mentions they mature faster, but Hana accepted a little too well that her 10 year-old is ~an adult~ now and can live alone in a dangerous forest by the mountains. Even if he was 18, no mother would stop worrying something would happen to him at any moment. That the girl opened up to a boy precisely might be bad, but it was worse to me that she had begun to change much earlier, and reject her wild nature because of social pressure. Sure, people change a lot at that age, but I think it was too extreme in both cases.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was trying to say. I liked watching them as little kids, because they were so fucking cute, and I'm not saying it's bad to explore the theme of how kids change when they grow, and the general idea of what it means to define yourself, and whose definition of who you are matters most. I know a lot of Japanese films prefer endings where everything isn't wrapped up neatly, leaving room for interpretation and reality over Disney endings. But the thing is, I really enjoyed the film, but the ending didn't feel like an ending at all to me. Nothing felt resolved, it only felt like more problems. The girl, imo, should have made a stand against the societal pressure that bogged her down throughout her school years, and the boy... should not have been allowed to run off. I thought it was frankly pretty depressing that the boy seems unable to socially adjust and make friends, therefore, he shuts himself out completely. To me, the film had an entirely negative outlook on how society affects children, and that seemed not like the theme they were trying to portray.

I had a completely different take on this story. Yuki doesn't necessarily "conform" to society pressures, the movie shows her eventually warming up to the human life and she says so herself that she *wants* to be a human. She knows it's the only way to help her family survive. I think she did the right thing in confessing her secret to that guy who likes her in the end. He's the only one who would accept her for who she was, whereas if she said 'screw it' and transformed in front of everyone she'd scare them all away. She did the right thing in concealing her identity, and helps her mother by doing so.

The point of the story is that the kids choose different paths that make him happy. The ending for the brother is not depressing per se, because he's happy with living in the forest as a wolf. His friends are the animals, so in essence he is not completely antisocial. He clearly cares for his animal friends a lot, and he feels its his duty to take over for his dying fox sensei. In my opinion his ending was just right, if not premature since he is quite young.

The film had a realistic portrayal of how society would treat creatures like wolf-halfbreeds if they ever existed. It's not a negative film, but rather an uplifting one since in the end the children are clearly happy with their lifestyle. The mother is happy for them, too.
