Boring TV shows recs

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
So f!s, I have a strange question for you. Today, a friend asked me to rec her some really boring TV shows that fit the following criteria (I'm quoting her here):

- calm and boring with absolutely zero excitement)
- no silly romance
- no on screen violence or sexual activity (no gross kissing either for that matter)
- no busybodies, jackasses, brownnosers, hypocrites, it girls etc.
- no weird animals
- no embarrassing activities like singing
- no soap operas or telenovelas

I doubt such a show exists (and told her as much), because who would even be the target audience?
But perhaps one of you knows something that at least mostly matches the criteria (besides the meditative stare-at-a-fireplace-for-an-hour videos)?

DERRICK. That man makes using a phone look like the most important thing in his day. The target audience is mainly old people in retirement homes and hospitals -well, no. But they're the ones who end up watching it, them, and people with nothing better to watch.

Whatever show that is I bet its fandom is cray-zee.

I don't know if you're counting 'reality' shows but those DIY or home improvement shows?

How about Bob Ross's show The Joy of Painting? Why is your friend looking for boring tv shows, if you don't mind me asking?

I think it's about wanting to relax without having anything at all to worry and think about.

They usually attempt to cram some excitement in, though. Usually not very successfully, but they do try.

Uh...cooking shows?

That's about all I can think of...

I don't find them boring, but I like watching/listening to stuff like Storage Wars, Pawn Stars, or Brad & Co's midnight movie reviews when I'm doing other stuff. IDK if that fits the criteria.

I would recommend Say Yes to the Dress for good boring TV, except that a lot of the families that come in tend to be busybodies, but you only see them for one episode each. It is a reality show about a high end shop that sells wedding dresses. That is all. Selling expensive pretty dresses that people will wear for one day.

If you want something slightly less shallow, Pitbulls and Parolees is a great reality show about a pitbull rescue center that exclusively hires paroled ex-convicts. There is far less drama than the premise would imply, as most of the guys are just regular dudes who need to get back into the job market (and Tina Torres does not hire violent/sex offenders, since she had teenage daughters when the center started). Good, often very heartwarming stories about making a dog rescue center work, with lots of redemption arcs woven in.

How It's Made (Science Channel) - I find some of it interesting, but one of the narrators speaks in such a monotone
Unwrapped (Food Network)
Too Cute (Animal Planet) - it's mostly puppies and kittens

I sometimes put on a golfing tournament for background noise - it's realatively low-key and the announcers talk pretty softly, I guess there's some excitment, but golf isn't my sport so I don't really care about the competition. And there's a fair amount of programming on PBS that I think would fit your criteria, but some of it is dependent on whatever your local affiliate decides to put on.
