I don't see a problem with it. They're not human, and as such human laws don't apply to them. The only issue I have is with the wizards who treat them poorly. Were I a wizard I'd totally be on board with having a house elf or five.

Anyway. I think more strides should have been taken to make sure that the elves weren't being abused, but I certainly don't think the owning of house elves should be abolished. In my opinion, as long as they WANT to serve-- which MOST of them do, from what I remember-- then who are we to decide whether they should or not?

there's a difference between 'who are we to decide?' and 'you will be my slave'. maybe elves want to be enslaved, but they are not provided this choice in hp canon. in canon, they are forcibly enslaved by the wizarding world as a whole. it's very frustrating to see so many people present the question in this way without accounting for the actual situation as it's shown in the books. there is never any choice given to them, they're born and die as slaves just as any human race would, and the ones that might personally want to be free are never afforded that option. because of this assumption that every single one of them wants to be a servant.
