I think HP fans put a lot more thought into the series than JKR ever did. Makes for very interesting discussions, but ultimately leaves me feeling a bit sad.

I don't think it's "she didn't put as much thought" as "she didn't realize how closely analyzed her books would be read". If you think her lack of consistency is bad try the Oz books.
