I'm sorry what, it's pretty difficult to hear your whining over the sound of Shinobu being best girl.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-15 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand what you're trying to say.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-15 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Hachikuji is the best anyway.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-15 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Shinobu is the "IT'S NOT PEDO GUYS, SHE'S REALLY A 600 YEAR OLD VAMPIRE PRINCESS" western pedophilia all right, but I'm confused what you mean with Nadeko.

I almost hesitate to ask, but who are these kids? I've never even heard of them before.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Seconded.

OP, this fandom(s?) is not as obvious as you think it is.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom is Bakemonogatari, a supernatural, sort of 'harem' show, with incredibly beautiful artsy visuals and apparently "pretentious" dialogue.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-15 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I like both these characters but I'm still incredibly creeped out by how sexualized they are, both in the show and by fandom. But I guess that's just Japan for you.

I just don't know how to feel about this show in general. On one hand all the girls are fucking kick-ass and amazing but on the other hand incest-pedo-loli bullshit, which is the number one thing I hate in anime.

But I guess that's just Japan for you.

I don't know the fandom or anything, but isn't the point of the secret that it isn't "just Japan"?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it's true that this kind of lolicon shit is popular in Western fandoms, but it is predominately big in the anime industry. Like, there is no way that a show sexualizing underaged girls would EVER air in the US/Western world, but it's kind of the norm in Japan (for anime anyways).

Yeah, you're right that it probably wouldn't - or at least, not one that does it so overtly. I think the sexualisation just happens in different ways and in different circles. Either way, it's awful. :/

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Well, US television sexualizes the fuck out of teenagers as young as 14. But anything sexualizing very young girls definitely wouldn't be allowed.

Toddlers and Tiaras. Also the Disney Channel.

I find that particular aspect of the secret baffling, though. Considering that the series those characters come from is as hardcore Japanese as it comes, I would hardly say that the blonde-vampire-girl character is supposed to represent what's bad about "western" pedophilia... in that fictional world she comes from some place in Europe initially, but the fact is that as a character she is fully a Japanese creation, coming from a Japanese novelist and brought to life in the anime by a Japanese animation production team, designed to appeal specifically to Japanese audiences.

I mean. Pedophilia is obviously a huge problem in the western world too. But I hardly see this series being an example of "western world pedophilia" since the characters were created BY Japanese people FOR Japanese people. Look elsewhere for examples of that! (I'd say that "Let the Right One In" is a good example of fictionalized pedobait vampire children from western societies... another good example would be the character of Claudia from the Lestat vampire series by Anne Rice. Shinobu from Bakemonogatari DOES NOT ACTUALLY QUALIFY).

Isn't the OP talking about the popularity of the characters with both Eastern and Western fans, though? Not the characters themselves, but people's reactions to them, both in and outside the target audience, which to some extent might/will be influenced by differing cultures.

That's what I read, but then again, it's still a little baffling because as you say this is made by Japanese people for Japanese people - as far as I can tell, the art styles are the same, even if the flags on top of their heads aren't. And I have never even heard of this series before, so there could be an obvious element to it I'm missing as well.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
This is how I read it.

The characters themselves are both fairly standard archetypes, but the Japan and the west both reacted very differently to them highlighting their specific flaws.

Nandeko is really unpopular in the west, and Shinobu up near the top of the polls, whereas the opposite is basically true of Japan. The secret seems to be suggesting the reason for this differing reaction indicates something to note.

Oh, that makes sense. I imagine having so stark a difference in poll results would certainly make the reactions seem more 'distinct'.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
no it isn't 'just japan' it's 'just the anime industry'

the vast majority of the country either thinks anime is weird and creepy as a whole or likes a few very mainstream things (one piece, gundam, whatever) and thinks the rest is weird and creepy
