LOVING your job thread

(Anonymous) 2013-03-15 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of us don't hate the jobs we either worked hard to attain or luckily fell into. So tell us what you LOVE about your job (and if you feel so inclined, tell us what you do).

I love that I get to make words better almost every day and even get a little mathy from time to time (usually not so much that it exceeds my limited abilities in the area). I love that I get to be creative with text and photographs. And I love that every day is a new day -- work generally doesn't follow me home at night or build up over days.

I'm a copy editor and page designer for a newspaper.

Oh man, yes. I spent 7 years unemployed (news flash: the economy in MI crashed ten years before the rest of the country and has yet to recover), and by the time I got a seasonal retail job at the regional equivalent of Target, I didn't have to PRETEND to smile at customers because I was just so overjoyed to have an income for even a little while again. (Which is one reason they hired me permanently when my seasonal gig was up.)

I mean, my current job is actually AWESOME, but even a "crappy retail job" feels wonderful after unemployment.

Implying that people who don't love their jobs are lazy sacks of crap who just didn't work hard enough. Nice.

Not saying that at all. But I DID figure out what I wanted to do with my life and worked very hard to get to a job I love. I'm sorry if you're unable or unwilling to do the same, but I refuse to feel bad or sell my accomplishments short just because someone else is unhappy with their lot in life.

You should definitely be proud of yourself and happy with your accomplishments, but you can do that without belittling others. Saying that the only reason someone doesn't have a job is because they are unable or unwilling to work hard is insulting.

nayrt

OP literally never said that, though. "Some of us don't hate the jobs we... luckily fell into." I feel like I'm the only sane one in some kind of mad alternate universe.

Seriously, did crazy anon miss that? *shakes head* I seriously wonder how some people manage to get their clothes on the right way sometimes.

Yeah, this. Sounds like they were very grateful and acknowledging that they were fortunate, not rubbing it in peoples' faces or implying that if they failed it was because they didn't do all the right things (in fact it seems to be saying just the opposite; it's a recognition that sometimes there are circumstances out of our control)

Shhhhhh no one is allowed to count their blessings. That's exactly like looking down on people now shhhhh

Saying someone is unable to do X to accomplish Y is not a judgment against them. Unwilling may be, but personally I'm fine judging people who're unwilling to to do what needs done to get what they want. And A job is very different from "job you love."

Wow.

OP specifically said that some people get lucky and fall into the job they've fallen into. Nothing they've said implied what you say they implied.

I work at the reception desk of a large commercial building and I love all the different people I get to meet. Some can be jerks but it's a lot less than I thought there would be. I know all of the delivery people and we get to chat sometimes, and the same with many of the people who work in the building. I want to keep this job for a long time.

At the moment I am a part-time carer for a little boy. I started watching him when he was 10weeks old and he is now almost a year and a half old. It's been so much fun seeing his development and watching him grow and learn and change. Everyday is something new! And he's getting to the age where we can really start to play games and communicate.

It's definitely not a long-term job, because it's very little hours and pays next to nothing, but I'm going to miss him so much when I eventually move away. He's just so much fun!

I don't want to get into a lot of details but I love my job because of the variety and intellectual stimulation. I do a lot of different things. Sometimes I'm in my office, sometimes I'm traveling, sometimes I'm outside. I've gained a wide variety of skills and a lot of both practical and esoteric knowledge doing this job. I'm frequently excited about work, and even when it's relatively boring, difficult, or otherwise unpleasant, I still don't HATE it because on balance it's interesting and fun and appeals to a lot of my talents and interests.

I get kind of annoyed when people insist EVERYONE hates their jobs and anyone who says otherwise is lying. I've had jobs I hated, I know they exist, and I know people who say that are trying to make themselves feel better by convincing themselves that everyone else has it just as bad and feels the same way. I can't help but feel offended and get defensive when people go on those rants, though. Want to vent about your job? No problem. I will listen and agree that your boss is an ass and share work horror stories of my own. Want to tell me my job must suck and I'm some kind of an idiot for enjoying it? No.

I FUCKING ADORE MY JOB OK

I love driving a stick-shift. I love wearing whatever the hell I want to work. I love going on adventures and seeing crazy shit. I love going new places and going someplace I've been a dozen times before. I love spending all day alone on the freeway, listening to the music I want at the volume I want. I love being presented with a challenge and overcoming it (unless the challenge involves other drivers being stupid, in which case they can get the fuck off my road, rrrr). I especially love driving through vast wildernesses in solitary splendor.

My job is pretty much the best thing that ever happened to me. C:

I mostly love my job. XD

I am a dog groomer, and I love working with dogs and I also love perfecting my craft. To me it is very artistic because I have my own unique style and each dog is slightly different from the next, and those differences completely affect the aesthetic of the final result and have to be taken into consideration. I love honing my skill and cultivating my eye for detail. I also love the appreciation and gratitude that I receive from my clients. It's really a wonderful job that makes me very happy (except when I'm overbooked :/).

But it has its drawbacks too, namely being covered in hair throughout my day and hand hurting problems.

I love teaching. I knew I wanted to be one as a child, and I find it very rewarding. I love that I get to help people learn and grow, not just academically but in other areas as well. I love that I get the opportunity to learn from my students and colleagues. I love that it is not a static profession but rather is constantly changing and constantly challenging me.

I've been away from f!s for a month and a half because my company sent me to work in our office in one of my favorite cities in the world. It was awesome and I loved it and I love the people in that office. I'm crossing my fingers that I get to go back soon. :)
