AO3 question

[personal profile] saku 2013-03-16 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
i've never used AO3 before, as i mentioned last time i asked a question, so i don't know how to interpret things like random kudos. is it common for people to leave kudos on things they might not have read, just to be nice or whatever?

i posted the first chapter of a portal fic i'm working on, expecting concrit (if people even ended up reading it), but a couple of people have left me kudos without commenting. i'm not expecting every single person who happens across it to comment, and maybe i'm just being down on myself, but i definitely wasn't expecting kudos either. ?? so i'm just wondering if it's like a common thing on AO3 for people to go around leaving kudos on random fics.

Not that I'm aware of, but people very frequently leave kudos without commenting.

yeah i knew kudos without commenting was the norm but that's pretty much all i know about AO3. i guess i'm just puzzled/shocked that people have left me kudos since i wasn't expecting it and just wanted to make sure it was probably because they actually read and liked what i'd written, as opposed to something else.

I don't think many people just randomly click the button. They probably liked your shit, even if they didn't have anything more to say then just that.

kudos is a way to show you read and liked the fic without having to come up with a comment. i never know what to say and (as a writer myself) hate generic "this was good!" comments so i use kudos like they are going out of style.

Kudos are pretty much a "like", so I assume most people have read it. People won't bother commenting if they don't have anything deeper to say than "I liked it". In some cases, people might be too intimidated if they don't know the writer personally to comment.

I leave kudos for things I really like. I read fic in a lot of fandoms that I'm not a part of, so I usually log out when I do it and leave them as a guest. As a writer I know it can be a little frustrating not to know who it was that liked the work, but I also prefer to know *someone* liked it even if I don't know who it was.

i don't mind people leaving kudos without commenting, i guess i'm just surprised that people left me kudos to begin with.

though yeah i agree it's be nice to know what they liked and didn't like, since i'd like to improve as a writer and that's why i'm sharing the fic anyway.

AYRT - I'm really uncomfortable communicating with people and don't like disclosing, well, just about anything. It's why I'm always anon on here, I have an anxiety attack if I even think about leaving a comment on someone's fic, and I'm not even comfortable leaving kudos when I'm signed in. I don't like anything tracing back to me. But I learned a week or two ago that if I sign out on AO3, I can leave a guest comment as long as I use a valid email address (I just use my throw away yahoo email address for it). AO3 didn't used to allow that, so maybe it's been around a while and more people are like me and didn't know? Also, some people just don't have an account and are probably unfamiliar with what AO3 does and doesn't permit. But now that I know about being able to leave comments, I try to do it more often so people know what it was I liked about their work.

I'd put a note at the end of your work saying "I'd love to get comments. You got crit for me, I won't be butthurt. Post away!"

Some people wait for permission before they'll say anything.

You're probably not going to get much con crit on AO3 from people. People are there to read stuff and enjoy it. It's perfectly normal to get a lot of kudos, too. I don't see why someone would just give a random fic kudos without reading it, it's just an easy way to tell the author you liked it if you don't/can't leave a comment.

good to know i shouldn't expect (con)crit, i was thinking/hoping that was a common thing on AO3 but now i know better lmao.

I'm relatively new to AO3 (I joined last December), and I was a little thrown by the Kudos thing, too. But you get used to it. And as someone who often can't think of more to say than, "Good fic!" or something equally trite, it's a nice way to leave feedback. If I have more to say I will (and have), but that's not always the case.

As others have said, it's very common for people to leave kudos on fic they like. Comments are getting rarer and rarer and kudos are a quick and easy way to say 'This is good, I liked this'. Sometimes I comment, sometimes I give kudos, but I don't think people would leave kudos if they hadn't read the fic.

I blame tumblr.

Re: AO3 question

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
I pretty much only give kudos. It's because it's in my leisure time and I enjoyed your fic, I'm letting you know I liked it, then I move on to the next one. I don't really want to sit around typing out what I enjoyed, what I didn't enjoy...I'm not a writer, just a reader.

Unless something really stands out, I'm not going to leave a comment - crit or praising.

I prefer this to ffnet, where I'd post a quick "nice!" comment which really annoyed my. Kudos are more like facebook/tumblr's like option. Read, acknowledged and liked! C:

You think that people click on a fic, scroll to the end, click kudos and then hit back without reading it?

If you write something super-rare, I suppose maybe there's a slim chance someone is trying to encourage you in the hopes you'll write something better eventually. But the point of kudos is still to encourage the author. No one is giving out kudos as charity.
