Re: Since SJW discussions are in vogue these days

I've seen it several times, and apparently the problem is not so much atheism in itself but rather atheist BNFs' misogyny. Richard Dawkins in particular.

BUT. It could be something else, I tend to avoid SJWs.

It's that. The thing I find irritating about it is that it always seems like atheism is held to a higher standard or (more likely) atheism is a safer target, since they must be depraved homicidal maniacs if they don't have the fear of God's wrath keeping them in line.

Uh, what? I don't think that most of the people on the Internet who argue against atheists take that line, outside of hardcore Christian apologists. For one thing, many of the people who argue against 'mainstream' atheism, if you're willing to allow me to call it that, are themselves atheists. I know that I am personally, and I argue against it plenty.

It's not that I believe that atheists are necessarily less moral. It's just that I think a lot of atheists out there, especially the ones who tend to be outspoken, who tend to be extremely critical of religion as such, and who tend to take Dawkins and Hitchens as their models, tend to make bad arguments, and also act like assholes a lot. And also the freethinker community has problems with misogyny, which is a third issue, and I don't think that they should get a pass for being atheists, if you know what I mean.

The problem is when people assume that all or most atheists are like the assholes -- when they are taken to be "mainstream atheism," and better role models like Greta Christina, Rebecca Watson, and Jessica Ahlquist are ignored in favor of Dawkins and Hitchens. Every civil liberties movement has prominent members that only have the one axis of marginalization and are assholes about anything relating to intersectionality, but (for instance) very few people take Dan Savage as the Voice of Gay People. There's this perception that Richard Dawkins is the Atheist Pope to a degree that is unsupported by his popularity within the atheist community.

Ah, but Greta Christiana is a bad person because she used the phrase "coming out" to compare her experiences as bisexual with her experiences as an atheist. \sarcasm.

Sorry, that kind of descended into a rant. You make good points, but at least in the circles I frequent, it seems like there can't be a discussion of atheism without going over those same points, which while valid, are not nor should they be the only thing said about atheism. I'm admittedly also accustomed to atheism being regarded as not a real marginalized group since they're all white, but maybe that's what I get get for frequenting ONTD_P.
