I could be wrong, but I'd gotten the impression that Tumblr is a lot like LJ in that if you follow people who are in fandom, that's what you're exposed to, but if you're there for other reasons, you'll see references to fandom sometimes but it's not all there is.

I mean, I always hear about there being a lot of social justice stuff on Tumblr, but I only encounter it if I'm looking at Tumblrs devoted to it. Otherwise, occasionally a petition or something will show up on my dash, but it's not very noticeable. My experience has been very much that what you see on Tumblr depends on who you follow and what tags you track.

Pretty much. I don't even follow specific people, I just track tags instead. I've found that to be a much better approach because then you only get the fandom stuff and get to avoid all of the personal whining.

God the petitions...I *hate* when tumblr people start reblogging petitions since most of the time they can't even be bothered to check that the petitiion is actually about what they're saying it's about [and there *are* times people completely take advantage of that].

I completely checked out of tumblr after they kept reblogging a petition that was, supposedly, to stop California from promoting gay conversion therapy...when, if they actually had read the damn thing before signing and reblogging, was to stop California from banning gay conversion therapy.

So I haven't heard anything about that...but wtf?

Yup. I have a few fandom things i follow (nice art, nice photos) but i also follow a couple nature/photography pages and a couple historycrush pages and one that's about costuming and such.....

Tumblr is what you make it.
