I'm pretty sure some non-depressed people enjoy dragging characters through every imaginable area of mental anguish. It's a variation on physically-beat-the-crap-out-of-the-character.

The fact that there's pretty much an entire genre of fanfiction (mostly in Stargate fandom) devoted to it shows that yeah, people just like their characters to go through terrible shit.

idk about projecting, but I agree that people really exaggerate how upset he was over Sherlock's 'death'. Of course, Sherlock was his best friend and he'd be really unstable over it, but suicidal? After all we've seen him through, I'm pretty sure he's stronger than that.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-17 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
...Because only weak people ever feel suicidal, amiright?

I'm probably more annoyed by people who portray John as a scorned woman when Sherlock returns and have him unable to understand why Sherlock did what he did and is more hurt by the fact Sherlock left him (boo hoo) than he did what he had to do to save, not just John, but two other people as well. Don't get me wrong, John is gonna be pissed as Hell when Sherlock gets back and I expect a punch and some angry words - but I can't see him being short-sighted enough to never forgive him. Which a lot of reunion fics seem to.

Personally I'm suspecting when S3 comes along they'll all be surprised to see John got on with his life, probably got a long-term girlfriend, got over it a little and when Sherlock comes back there's the initial fall-out but then back to how things were (though maybe John won't live at Baker Street again going from Moffat's comments).

TL:DR, everyone in fandom seems to be preparing themselves for a lot of soap-opera drama where I doubt there will be much at all.

OMG YES THIS.

Frankly, I just see something very creepy in the image of John who's very upset about Sherlock's dickish strategy. It's like he's saying that he's less happy with Sherlock being alive but dickish than with Sherlock being dead.

I actually prefer the original version of the reunion for this reason. It also has a hurt!Watson, but nothing close to punching Holmes in the face.

THIS so much. Come on.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
In part 3, I'm guessing Mary will be on the scene and the hoyay will be on the back burner for a long time. Oh, what a gnashing of teeth there will be.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-17 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I know we have pictures of the 221B set now. Has anyone looked to see if any of the props could belong to John or maybe a woman?

Doesn't irritate me, but it's definitely OOC. Both for John and for the original Doctor Watson.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
i think it's more OOC than projecting.

Ugh. Yeah, that seems pretty OOC...

John and Hawkeye should probably start a "Fandom doesn't like I can be a functional adult" support group.

Oh my god, it is a crime what some people do to Clint's character, jesus christ.

Throw in Tony Stark as well. He has issues, but is still a functional adult.

I'd say it's more likely that people are latching onto a canon event as an excuse to put the character through the wringer because they like the delicious angst and suffering and stuff. I'm generalizing, but in other fandoms I've seen, it's not that they feel "this is obviously how the character would react, therefore that's what I will write", it's more "it's possible and plausible that the character might react this way, so I will therefore write about that possibility because it appeals to me most".

I think this beautifully sums up fanfic in general.

Well he certainly seemed to have some trouble coping, but he was nowhere near the levels of sadness he was pre-Sherlock. And if the show follows ACD, isn't he supposed to meet Mary before Sherlock comes back?

(I would LOVE to see Mary in the show but would continue to avoid most of the fandom)

She's supposed to die during the hiatus.

If the show followed ACD, he'd have met her before Sherlock "died"; they meet during "Sign of the Four".

I can't read "sadsack" without thinking "sad sack of shit". Probably not the sentiment the OP intended.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-17 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Having trouble coping as well as risk-seeking behaviour, I can see. Downright suicidal? Probably not.

(I still don't mind reading anything along those line though, I enjoy reading about mental anguish... yeah...)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-17 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Having trouble coping as well as risk-seeking behaviour

This.

What people seem to forget most about BBC Watson is that he's an adrenaline junkie; in a sense just as messed up as Sherlock. The whole reason he goes along with Sherlock on cases is because he needs that rush and that danger that he got while he was in the war. While he'll definitely miss Sherlock terribly, losing that lifestyle is probably just as damaging and just settling for a civilian life would drive him crazy.

So I can see him getting into dangerous situations where he knows he could die and he probably wouldn't give a shit but it's not really his intention. But outright wanting to kill himself? So OOC.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-17 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
"John has no friends" does seem to be unfortunately common, despite there being no basis for this, at least not after the begining of "A Study in Pink."

Oh, geez. That's cringey, but I agree. However, I really hope the S3 premiere isn't set too far into the future and John's not too moved-on (like he gets engaged/married in the interim in the stories, right?), not because I think his life should be utter depressing crap forever now that Sherlock's dead (as far as he knows), but because, like, I want him to want to move on, but be kind of unable too because he still can't let go because something just feels off. Basically I want him to somehow subconsciously sense that Sherlock's alive, but not understand how/why. And I'm not even a hardcore shipper, I just mean in a soulmates/friendship sense. I just feel like when you're that close to someone, you can tell when they're in the world and when they're not. IDK.
