I'm always a bit baffled by people who want all of fandom to stop doing X and start doing Y. Let a thousand flowers bloom, right? Be the change?

I'm extra befuddled about this one, though. Why would it be 'incredible' if most fan works were things it were 'hard to get excited' about? Why do you want everyone to write fic you don't even like?

Agree about being the change. I know that it's hard sometimes if you're craving it yet you're the only producing fanworks, but a lot of the time, fanworks encourage others to get involved too.

^ this. Being the change can suck if you're the only one changing. lol That gets into the whole difference between reading your own work and reading someone else's and what you get out of either experience. But yeah, eventually, fanworks beget fanworks. It can be a long wait though. ;)

+1

the amount of whine in the secret is also annoying.

-1 The lack of wine in this secret is annoying. Wine makes everything better!

Sounds like what the OP is having a kind of id vs. superego conflict between what their overall fannish values suggest they should want and what they actually desire, deep down.

Not everyone is equipped to be a writer, and I hate that rote answer for "I sure would like to read more of this!" is "Write it, then!" as if it's a) easy and b) the same.

Well, no. Not everyone writes fic. But they don't get to tell people who do what to do with themselves, either.

Maybe not, but they do get to say they wish there were more X.

Everybody is always free to wish for something, but it is dickish to say 'uughhhh, stop having fun with Y so you can do X for me'.

I mean, not only is it dickish to sort of want to dictate how people spend their free time but it is also unproductive. A lot of writers write both shippy fics and gen fics. Telling people to stop having fun doing this one thing so they can do this other thing for the OP probably doesn't exactly inspire a lot of people.

but it is dickish to say 'uughhhh, stop having fun with Y so you can do X for me'.

It is, but the OP didn't say anything like that.
