This is so freaking true. I'd much rather read a good, plotty, in-character gen fic over a terribly OOC smutfic anyday.

I'm only here because the kittens are too adorable.

(Also gen is boring and I get really angry if I find a long fic with my OTP and there is no sex scene.)

I'm always a bit baffled by people who want all of fandom to stop doing X and start doing Y. Let a thousand flowers bloom, right? Be the change?

I'm extra befuddled about this one, though. Why would it be 'incredible' if most fan works were things it were 'hard to get excited' about? Why do you want everyone to write fic you don't even like?

If a gen fic has a good plot it's interesting, though really good plots don't come along every day, and one might miss those that do because the summary doesn't jump out at one.

I'm lucky that way, I stumbled across an epic Hobbit/LotR gen fic that I've been following ever since, and I consider it just as good reading as any of my shippy fic.

OK I know I haven't been super active on F!S as of late but this secret comes up a lot. I know it can be annoying, and there are honestly times where I do NOT want sex/smut in my fic (though 9/10 I will want to read shipping). But, the way I see it, fanfiction and other transformative works are a way for fans to get what they want that the show/work doesn't offer them, for whatever reason. Maybe it's an extension of a scene, maybe a pairing that doesn't happen on the show, and maybe it's sex.

The reason that (while I appreciate it) I rarely read gen fic is because, more often than not, what I want from that is already fulfilled. For example, I would never read an X-Files fic that didn't involve Mulder/Scully in some capacity (either fluffy pre-relationship or focusing on the relationship) because if I want the paranormal stuff, I'll watch the show.

Eh, there's nothing wrong with liking shipping or gen fic. You like what you like and I don't see the shame in that. Also...fandom isn't going to change. Shipping has always been a large part of fandom and always will be. Gen will always exist too, so you have options. I don't see why you're reading gen fic if you don't enjoy it though.

(I'll read both but readily admit the majority of fic I read is shipping fic and that's what tends to interest me most. )

I agree with you, though my problem is different. I'm into Gen only if it's COMPLETELY gen, as in, no pairings or romance. AT ALL.

Unfortunately, most fandoms I've been in trnaslate 'Gen' as 'plot that doesn't focus on romance, but still features canon and/or straight couples'.

No, damnit, if it has any couples in it, I'd like to know beforehand, please.

Why do people always conflate shipping with smut and kinks and all that? Is it so hard to believe that some of us don't care about that stuff and like shipping just because we find the characters' interactions and relationships interesting?

This thread depresses me. I only ever write gen, and I totally prefer reading gen over reading shippy fic. Gen as in "stories with no pairings whatsoever, not even in the background".

That being said, yeah. Kittens are adorable. And it's really odd to expect fandom to change in this regard.

Personally, I go to fandom for the sex fic. :/ I live in a very... prude? household. In the weirdest way, too. Not religious, but they all seem to think they are too "intelligent" for sex. If I were to buy like an erotica book, I'd get so much shade from my family. So it's really nice to be able to just go somewhere and be able to read really awesome porn. I can get gen anywhere, with no issues.

Not that gen fic is bad, just... not really any use for me.

I like reading and writing (hopefully! LOL) good stories. Sometimes those are gen and sometimes they feature relationships. Sometimes the stories with relationships contain sex and sometimes they don't. As a gen writer, it can be frustrating when the reception for a well-crafted and interesting gen story is almost nonexistent compared to a less complex shippy fic, but *shrugs*. I would never want either category to be absent from fandom.

I agree with those above on the "why not have more of everything instead" train.

As a sidenote though, I personally read much more shippy & porn fic than plotty gen, but the reason is that ...most plotty gen is not very good. I feel like it takes most writers a lot more time, skill, and effort to pull off a really long, well-researched, well-plotted, thoughtfully developed fic whether it's gen or romance or whatever. The people who can pull that off successfully are usually already working as professional writers, because they can get paid to do that. Which is why most plotty genfic is not going to stand up against most canons. If the fic writers could do it as well as the canon creators, they'd likely end up creating their own canons. Since they usually don't do it as well, I'd prefer reading or watching a new canon instead.

[personal profile] suzumori 2013-03-16 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree. Kind of. I mean, I collect genfics like I collect pokemon. And if they are good and focus on a character that interests me, then you bet I will re-read them a thousand times and rec them. Also they can be fun and sometimes give me the interaction from two characters I think are interesting, and would be fun to see them interact.

On the other hand, there are those times where I just want to read about two characters going at it like freaking rabbits.

My biggest pet peeve with pornfics is that they tend to change one (or both) characters personalities to the point where I could be reading original fics, instead of fandom fics.

Personally I don't read a lot of gen fics, because I get that in the source material. I don't have a "need" to read about stuff that I already get on a pretty regular basis.

Also I am mostly in fandom for the shipping, the shows I don't have any particular ships or the ships are canon I don't have a reason to read fanfics.

Not saying I never ever read gen fics, if I stumble upon something that sounds interesting I read it. I just don't particularly go looking for it, I usually search with a pairing, and as I previously mentioned most of my pairings that I read fanfics for are not canon, so pretty unlikely to come up in gen fics.

did that make sense?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, my favourite type of fic is a plotty fic with some side of romance. I get incredibly bored with sex scenes (I basically read them only when I'm "in the mood" and than I just need a PWP fic that hits my kinks).

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Generally, aside from rare moods, when I'm reading fic I want two things: I want plot and/or I want fluff. Fortunately, those two things show up in BOTH shipfic and genfic. Some better than others, obviously.

The one thing I don't usually want is porn. Shipfic, I prefer short'n'fluffy or long'n'plotty, because those usually avoid porn (and the kind I hate are the long'n'porny, since there's no point trying to have a plot if you have to keep interrupting it every five minutes so the main characters can bone - well, there might be, if someone could do it well, but so few can).

Genfic, I like long'n'plotty and short'n'fluffy. I've read some gorgeous friendshippy fics in the short'n'fluffy. Genfic has some advantages in the average number of people involved in the fluffy parts, too, since things like team bonding and family fluff fall under it.

Variety is the key, really. And, uh. Keeping the porn in the right places (and not in the middle of the goddamn dramatic escape, hello, you can wait more than half a chapter at a time!).

[personal profile] truxillogical 2013-03-16 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I think I follow. Fandom often becomes All About The Ships, and that can get annoying, especially when it's everywhere, and you just wanna have a talk about canon, but all anyone can think about is how some incident is totally ship fodder. And, I think, it's easy to feel like it's a little shallow, like we all might as well be reading Harlequin Romance novels.

But yeah, to me, if I want gen, I read/watch the source material. I go to fic to get the stuff that the canon wouldn't/couldn't give me. There are a handful of fandoms I've been in where the genfic was just as good, or even more exciting than, shipfic (Flash Rogues comes to mind), but really, I do go to fic for the same reasons other folks go to romance novels. And there's nothing wrong with that.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-17 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I have nothing against gen fic. I really don't. If it's high quality, I will read it and love it, like I would any good book. But I'm going to be honest, 95% of fic I've read is not good enough to keep me engaged without a lot of it involving romantic relationships, sex and/or kinks. I literally make less and less exceptions the lower the rating is. If it's an R, I'll give some things a pass and enjoy it anyway. PG-13, probably not very much, but maybe a few things. I won't read G or PG unless it's extremely well done (but will appreciate and love the hell out of it).

I kinda agree. I think shipping characters romantically is more popular than appreciating friendship/family. It makes me sad because, while I do ship, there are some relationships that are not romantic but still beautiful and platonic.

I just hate how sex is the epitome of closeness for 95% of fandom..

Honestly I would appreciate any fic for my small fandoms, but I can understand the want for some good gen fic, especially if the canon allows for such opportunities.

Although some smut fic can be just too weird for me, especially with uh, certain kinks and stuff. D:
