(Anonymous) 2013-03-17 05:47 am (UTC)(link)Firstly, it's mostly female dominated. Considering that for so many years it was frowned up for women to express their sexual desires and kinks, and most entertainment industries certainly didn't market their products towards female sexuality in the same way it did for males, it doesn't surprise me that when a mostly safe place for women to express their kinks and sexual desires came around it became a big success.
Secondly, fandom is one of the few places that has always been more open to same-sex themed stuff than any other entertainment sources. So many people, who have had these feelings and needs bottled up, suddenly found the perfect place to release them... and that rather ironically came out sounding far more innuendo filled than I had intended! It was also a safer and more welcoming space for people who didn't identify as straight too.
I do like the occasional gen fic, but I'll admit that I tend to gravitate towards non-gen (anything from cute and fluffy pairing fics, to full on NC-17 PWPs and kinks). If you prefer gen then I can understand your frustration, but there are gen fics out there in most fandoms. It's not like they're completely non-existent.
