OK I know I haven't been super active on F!S as of late but this secret comes up a lot. I know it can be annoying, and there are honestly times where I do NOT want sex/smut in my fic (though 9/10 I will want to read shipping). But, the way I see it, fanfiction and other transformative works are a way for fans to get what they want that the show/work doesn't offer them, for whatever reason. Maybe it's an extension of a scene, maybe a pairing that doesn't happen on the show, and maybe it's sex.

The reason that (while I appreciate it) I rarely read gen fic is because, more often than not, what I want from that is already fulfilled. For example, I would never read an X-Files fic that didn't involve Mulder/Scully in some capacity (either fluffy pre-relationship or focusing on the relationship) because if I want the paranormal stuff, I'll watch the show.

Last semester I worked or had class every evening until ~9:30, way after the discussion's mostly over. I'm also graduating this semester, so busy busy busy.

But yeah, I occasionally lurk around F!S, but I'd like to get back to the commenting! I miss it :)

I see. I'm glad you're just busy and that everything's okay. :) Congrats on the graduation!

Maybe in the future you'll have fine to.

Thank you :) I mean, in my absence I did break my ankle (mentioned it on F!S, I think) but nothing like, super serious.

Yeah, for sure in the future, especially since I don't really have anything lined up post-graduation, haha. :)

I must've missed that thread. :( Sorry to hear that. Hopefully all is well now?

You're back!

Indeed I am! =D Glad to be back :)

And man, it kind of bums me out if I missed any good OUAT secrets, haha. There was some drama in the fandom, so I'm sure there were some interesting ones.

Not really. A few Rumbelle secrets and a couple "OMG REGINA IS EVIL/JUST MISUNDERSTOOD!" and one particularly memorable "Emma has no right to claim Henry as her son! This show is shitting all over adoption!!!!!"

Oh, ok; I know there was drama where someone asked Ginnifer Goodwin about Swan Queen, she said "lolno never happening" and people calling her homophobic.

This secret literally has not come up in months (and how would you know if you haven't been her?) -- and that's being extraordinarily generous. I'd guess more like a year or more.

And while of course you're free to read whatever you want, I think you're really selling yourself and many good gen fic short if you think gen fic has nothing to offer that the source doesn't provide.

it has nothing to do with selling gen fic or yourself short though. If you don't have the interest in it, then it is not going to be fun to read regardless of how good the fanfic writers are.

This. I'm in fandom for what I didn't get out of the canon, which means there are plenty of canons I like but am not interested in the fandom for at all because I was satisfied with the canon the way it is.

If I'm happy with the canon itself, I have no motivation to go seek out fanwork.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-17 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
You mean you always want something different than canon - you never just want MORE of it? Huh.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-17 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
Not if I'm happy with the way it ended. If I feel that everything was resolved nicely and all loose ends were tied up, then to me, the canon is finished and I have no desire for anything more.

On the other hand, if there were things in the canon that were left unexplained or unexplored, that's when I go searching for fic.

Personally, to me, a lot of the time fanfic doesn't measure up to canon. Which is fine, cause one is often written by a team of professionals and the other is written by someone just for fun. But at the same time is someone is writing something that has already happened in canon, for me to enjoy it, it'd have to be roughly be par with canon. Yet, if someone is writing about something that didn't happen in canon at all, I have different standards. Weird maybe, but that is the way I end up working.

This is not a gen vs ship thing though. For me it is about all possible material. Like, say I'd be reading about a murder mystery fanfic for any Sherlock Holmes canon, I'd really want it to measure up to the kind of cases Holmes deals with in canon, cause I'd really want that kind of experience. But if someone writes something like a murder mystery for Yu-gi-oh, I wouldn't have such high standards cause the original canon doesn't deal with those kind of things.
