That sounds like a pretty dumb setup. You hang around someone you don't like so you can take the focus off your own shame for your harmless hobby by putting it on his. Why not just watch your show, collect your toys, ignore the haters, and have friends you like?

^can this just be the motto of every member of every fandom? Because it kind of sums it up.

I mean, OP, I can kind of get you. I won't deny that as a teenager in a comic book shop I would sometimes look at the adult men playing Magic The Gathering and think "well I'm a nerd and people make fun of me, but at least I'm not like THAT"... but that's a pretty sad mindset, honestly.
