Here's the deal: I'm usually horribly shy and socially awkward. I'm also fat. However, when I'm in cosplay all of this disappears. I'm proud of every photo and every complement. I'm a bit of a camera whore, truth be told.

However, I don't look myself up online afterwards. Maybe it's because I only go so smaller conventions, but I've never experienced the viciousness everyone is talking about. In my experience, if someone doesn't like my costume they'll just pass their way rather than insult me.

If you want to cosplay here's what you do: make a costume you feel fabulous in. If you're not comfortable in it, then there is no point to go out wearing it. Go with a friend/friends. Have a good time. Don't look yourself up online afterwards.

Cosplaying can be a great self-confidence boost but you have to do it right.
