1. Better control in the snow and ice. Granted, not everyone gets to deal with that, but I often do. In fact, I'm looking at having some roll in before I get to go home from work.

2. The same reason learning CPR should be mandatory in school. You might need it in an emergency. Until I taught her to drive stick, my wife would often have nightmares of needing to get me to the hospital, but not being able to drive my car.

My dad doesn't have a left hand. He may have learned before the accident, but he can't drive stick shift now, and there are people born with missing limbs.

That's a good reason for him not to learn, but that doesn't apply to anyone who is physically capable of driving stick. Some people are legally blind and can't drive at all, but the rest of us still think driving is a useful skill to have.

I have all four of the usual limbs, but my motor control is fucked up. I literally cannot do one thing with one hand and something else with the other, at least not at a speed that would be safe to drive at.

I also have a bad back and hips, driving stick is extremely painful for some reason. I tried it a couple of times but it wasn't worth learning becasue it's something I'll never ever want to do again.

I think learning to drive a stick is a good idea, and should be included more prominently in driver's ed curriculums than it is.

But #2 isn't limited to learning to drive a stick. There are other types of driving knowledge that someone can lack that would be useful in an emergency. Not everyone knows how to drive in the first place. I know how to drive but haven't done so in years, and while I'm fine with public transportation for the most part, I have the same concerns about being able to drive a loved one's car in an emergency. I could do it, but it wouldn't be easy.

In the US, where most cars are automatic, a stick-shift car is less likely to get stolen because fewer people know how to drive them. (Unless the stick-shift car in question is a fancy sports car, which will be targeted for its value, regardless.)

Heh. If Fast and Furious, the Italian Job, Gone in 60 Seconds, etc. teach us anything about grand theft auto (besides it being sex-ay) it's that the kind of people who want to steal a flashy sports car with manual transmission also know how to drive one. TIME TO SHIFT DRAMATICALLY, BITCHES!

After seeing all of the Fast and the Furious franchise, it's kind is sad how excited it makes me to see character shift dramatically, haha.
