Personally, I think learning to drive stick should be mandatory.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Why?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Better control in the snow and ice. Granted, not everyone gets to deal with that, but I often do. In fact, I'm looking at having some roll in before I get to go home from work.

2. The same reason learning CPR should be mandatory in school. You might need it in an emergency. Until I taught her to drive stick, my wife would often have nightmares of needing to get me to the hospital, but not being able to drive my car.

3. Why not learn it?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

3. Why not learn it?

My dad doesn't have a left hand. He may have learned before the accident, but he can't drive stick shift now, and there are people born with missing limbs.

I think learning to drive a stick is a good idea, and should be included more prominently in driver's ed curriculums than it is.

But #2 isn't limited to learning to drive a stick. There are other types of driving knowledge that someone can lack that would be useful in an emergency. Not everyone knows how to drive in the first place. I know how to drive but haven't done so in years, and while I'm fine with public transportation for the most part, I have the same concerns about being able to drive a loved one's car in an emergency. I could do it, but it wouldn't be easy.

In the US, where most cars are automatic, a stick-shift car is less likely to get stolen because fewer people know how to drive them. (Unless the stick-shift car in question is a fancy sports car, which will be targeted for its value, regardless.)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. If Fast and Furious, the Italian Job, Gone in 60 Seconds, etc. teach us anything about grand theft auto (besides it being sex-ay) it's that the kind of people who want to steal a flashy sports car with manual transmission also know how to drive one. TIME TO SHIFT DRAMATICALLY, BITCHES!

Lets just eliminate stick. Computers do it better.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but even then, you should still learn stick so you can drive awesome old cars, or cheap shitty old cars. If you need to.

Blasphemy!

There's a reason some sports cars aren't even available in automatic.

Yeah, they are shitty obsolete cars.

Because some people aren't comfortable with the genitalia they have and feel that having manual control of the gears in a fast car compensates for this.

Not always. Computers tend to shift based on your RPMs, whether or not that's a good idea based on road conditions.

Also, manual transmissions generally get better gas mileage.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, they don't. Current technology means that automatics shift more efficiently than the vast majority of human drivers, meaning that automatics have better fuel economy.

I retract my troll posts above in the name of real life trolling.

I think it's a good skill to learn, but I don't think it should be mandatory. Stick is becoming less and less common, and while having the skill expands your possibilities in getting a car, it's not really necessary in order to learn how to drive.

I say this having been taught on stick, my first car being stick, and preferring stick over automatic. I love them and I think they're great, but it shouldn't be mandatory to learn how to drive a dying breed.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Manuals are dying? Certainly not where I live. Almost everyone I know drives a manual, and if you decide to learn to drive in an automatic a lot of people look down on you.

I don't even know how many times I've heard conversations that are basically "So can you drive?
"Yeah, only automatic though"
"Oh so you can't really drive"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
You live in an area full of incredibly childish people.

Dying breed? Depends where you live - it's vastly more common to drive a manual car here in the UK than to drive an automatic. Not sure about the Continent but pretty sure it's the same in Ireland too. Sales of manual cars always trump automatics.

It's defacto mandatory where I live, because you can't drive a manual if you learned in an automatic. Now because most cars on the road are manual, most people will learn to drive in a manual so they're not limiting their choices, and then since you learned to drive in a manual you'll buy a manual because that's what you're used to, so most cars on the road are manual.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Douchey position. It's one thing if it's highly recommended but mandatory is an imposition and a removal of personal choice. Even vaccines aren't forced on people and they're more directly lifesaving than driving stick.

But what if one thinks that vaccines should be mandatory? I mean, herd immunity must be maintained.
