Grossed Out

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I just discovered the AO3 tag "emotional constipation".
RLY?

Can't imagine a person in their right mind wanting to tag their work with... with- with this.

For the same reason I can never hear the "you cracked my shit" expression and those of its ilk without shuddering mentally. Apparently, my imagination is way too vivid.

Seriously, how can anybody use these

[freaks out and cringes in a very dark corner]

Not everyone is as literal a thinker as you.

Should have made this a secret so we would have something to laugh about. WHAT IS FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE!?!?!?!?!?!?

Re: Grossed Out

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Whoa, whoa, folks, it's not that I don't get figurative language, but I think that every figurative expression has a strong flavour of its original meaning for me. I cannon use them without picturing everything literally; it just doesn't intefere with the "right" interpretation. And if the literal meaning is gross, it makes me feel gross.

Thought it worked like this with the many people x_x'

OMG I really need to go to sleep right now.

It should've been "cannoT", "inteRfere", and "many people".

Re: Grossed Out

Not really. I usually don't think about the literal meaning of such expressions when I use them. It honestly took me a moment to figure out why those expressions were even bothering you.

Man, you must have a real problem with the many and varied uses of the word "shit".

Re: Grossed Out

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't really bother me when it doesn't touch me :) Say, if somebody exclaims "shit!" meaning to express their dissatisfaction, I don't feel anything of this kind. As soon as people start to elaborate and use "cracking shit", "my grandmother's shit" and whatnot, I want them to stop so badly. ->or, for example, here it would be appropriate to add "...so badly it hurts", but I can't, because I imagine that it really hurts. whatever.

Hm, that's interesting. Anyway, I'm not saying that it's bad that you think that way, just that it's a little unusual. I can sometimes be pretty literal-minded myself, but not quite as much as you are.

Re: Grossed Out

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Is it referring to someone who can't express emotion or someone that is so distressed they get constipated? I'm just really curious now.

Re: Grossed Out

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
The former. Although I'd love it if AO3 had it in its second meaning. That would be still gross but hilarious

Re: Grossed Out

It could be a whole new genre of fic. "I can't poop!" fic or something.

Re: Grossed Out

(Anonymous) 2013-03-19 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, imagine the picture:

just as now we have tons of standard 5+1 fics, one shot Reichenbach reunions, Merlin post-series and Thilbo one shots, we would have "I can't poop!" stories

"Sherlock can't poop and John has to help him out"

"Merlin and Arthur meet after Arthur's awakening, and everything seems oojah-cum-spiff. They have one problem, though; Merlin can't poop"

"Three Garridebs "I can't poop!" fic"

"Apart from obtaining the Ring, the Fellowship has to deal with Bilbo who can't poop. Thorin comes to rescue"

"Sherlock can't poop and John has to help him out"

This fic actually exists. I've read it.

Leave it to the Sherlock fandom...

(I bet you there's similar fic in the Harry Potter fandom)

Constipation is when all your poop gets backed up and can't come out.

Emotional constipation is when all your emotions get backed up and can't come out.

It's used to describe somebody for whom "Cannot Spit it Out" is a permanent facet of their personality rather than a situational happenstance.

Bit of an overeaction you got going on there
