Re: TWENTY (no I'm not the OP)

Why would I stay out of the fandom for a series I want to get to know? Stay away from all the other fans who can educate me or connect me to the canon until I can get the canon on my own?

If my research is good enough and if I educate myself well enough, there's no reason that I SHOULDN'T write about a series. Either I'll (hopefully) get con-crit and learn or I'll improve the more I find out on my own. And don't get me wrong, in all instances I prefer to enjoy the canon, be it watching all of a show or reading all of a book series, but in some cases I run across something I love (or something I just want to be INCLUDED in because none of my friends can shut up about it) that's just not my usual forte, and I give it a go anyway in my own way.

But at least I'm trying to understand, and I'm not harming anyone by writing a fanfic that you think is crappy. You don't have to read it, or at least not for longer than the 30 seconds it will take you to ascertain that you think it sucks and hit 'back'.

Yes people that write stupid not-thought-out stories with bad characterization can be really annoying, but people that HAVE seen the entire canon still do that anyway. Unfortunately, there will ALWAYS be shitty fic and stupid people in your fandom even if everyone played the game or watched the show ten times first.

And I DO understand how with FFVII especially you end up with people who've seen Advent Children but never played the game and now you have this 'new generation' of swarms of fangirls going 'OMFG SEPHIROTH' cause he's pretty and badass but they know nothing else about him, and they all want to write stories where he has babies with their Mary Sue. I'm SURE that it must make you want to tear your hair out in a rage.

But before you uproot all your follicles, try that back button out. I know it sucks to have a fandom that's bombarded with newbs that are only there for the shinies but in the end, it's only fandom. You just have to take a deep breath, back away slowly, and seek out something better and leave the horrors alone.

(Start a 'canon completed only' comm on LJ or something where you screen memberships if you want to make yourself a safe haven of like-minded people perhaps?)
