OP

I'm trying my hardest not to let it. In particular the other tumblr-ers (?) I know have started talking about things and making in-jokes that only an active tumblr user would understand. That's great for the six or so of us that have accounts, but sometimes I just want to grab them by the shoulders and say "YOU'RE ALIENATING EVERYONE ELSE."

I have seen it on "other girls go to party, I'm on my computer on Friday/Saturday nights" too.

Still OP

Oh gosh, I hate that. Then they say that they deserve friends/boyfriends because that somehow makes them better than the girls that go out and party. Well, the girls that go out and party have wider social circles because THEY INTERACT WITH PEOPLE. It's cool to have movie nights with one or two people, or even to stay in by yourself, but in moderation.

(Sorry for the caps--I'm no good at HTML.)

Because, you know... If you're too busy to go to party is obvious you're busy to care to read a book or something that spechuls others girls do! :|

Exactly. I mean, I read a lot and write a lot and participate in fandom...but I still go out and have fun.

And I am introverted! I'm introverted, shy, and prone to panicking. But I've still found a group of friends that I enjoy hanging out with in real life.

some of us don't get invited to the parties so we don't have the opportunity to interact with said people! not all of us are home because we choose not to get involved. some of us are those kids who no one wants to involve.

If no one wants to involve you but you WANT to be involved, find another circle to involve yourself in. Take a class, volunteer with kitties, attend some free shit at the Y, challenge strangers to games of pretend war acted out with green plastic army men, you get out there and find ways to interact with people. It's not a party but it can lead to some. If nothing else, you get a spiffy resume.

That attitude of being better than other girls cause they do x fannish/geeky/whatever thing did not originate on tumblr though. I've been on the net for over a decade and i've seen that attitude everywhere from the neopets board to facebook to twitter to you name it.

I know that, but is like Tumblr made it 100% worse.

Oh, bloody hell, that must be annoying for you to deal with if it's happening often. Some people don't grasp the concept of "There's a time and place" as well as others.

Saying that, unlike my friends, though I have one, I'm not very into tumblr. They occasionally make jokes or references that I would only get if I was more into it. I don't really feel alienated unless the entire conversation goes off into that direction and I literally have nothing to say for a long time. Is that happening with your friends, or is it just some jokes here and there?

Re: OP

No, I understand their jokes like 95% of the time. But the problem is they make these jokes a lot, and then I get sucked into that group that's making everyone else uncomfortable because they don't get it.

Oh, I know that you understand them - I was just adding my own experience of being around those jokes and not understanding them, much like what some of your friends might be going through (but, it seems your tumblrised friends are making the jokes a lot more often than mine do). Sorry if that wasn't clear. =)

Have you mentioned to your tumblrised friends that they're making people uncomfortable, or have you only thought it so far? This kind of thing can cause friendship groups to splinter down the line if it's divisive enough, so...

I haven't mentioned it. I'm no good at saying things that might offend people.

Some people don't grasp the concept of "There's a time and place" as well as others.

THIS

God I wish some of my RL friends could grasp this. There is absolutely a time and a place to look up porn on your laptop to show it to your friends, but in the middle of the fucking cafeteria is not one of them. And you wonder why people avoid this table, or why so many of us are embarrassed to be seen by you?
