I'm Norwegian, maybe it is a culture thing?

Maybe. There is a lot of things about US/Western culture that just makes no sense to me.

I'm from the U.S. and most of the people I am friends with irl are nerdy and/or involved in fandom to some extent. On campus, my two best friends and I spend a huge amount of time together doing fannish things.

The U.S. is huge and has a lot of subcultures, though, and I know people from the U.S. who have trouble finding fandom friends irl. It's probably a combination of luck, going to a large public university, and being at least somewhat outgoing.

As a Malay who has/still have friends who read Doraemon manga and has cousins that still watch the anime -and others- when it airs, I'm guessing it's a culture thing.
