What is so awful about recognizing elements of racism/homophobia/predominance of white men in media etc? I've been in fandom, but only a small portion of it and I'm genuinely curious as why the word "social justice" is apparently so horrible. I've never encountered a SJW before online or in real life. I guess I'm lucky?

You might be one of them and not know it.

But you might not. An honest answer.

Social justice is fine. Social justice warriors are haters.

The same way there's that one "Hard Sci-Fi" Guy on your Star Trek/Star/ Wars/Dr. Who/Torchwood/Whatever, forum. The guy that picks every episode apart. Now, I don't mean he points out some things when he sees them and we all have a good laugh about how they got a core tenant of physics wrong. I'm talking about the guy that takes one quick comment somebody made in a hand-waving explanation who goes "IT DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY GODDAMN" who not only then rants for 2 pages about why it doesn't work, but goes back and looks at 3 other episodes this statement would complicate/contradict/whatever has him butthurt. And pretty quickly you are just thinking "Why the fuck are you here then, shut up shut up we are trying to enjoy this shit and you just are determined to hate every little thing go away already" And he's got enough mouthbreather friends around agreeing with all this shit that if you say something your gonna get the whole group of them Pming you nasty shit just because.

Now imagine that, but instead of "Warp Speed couldn't do that" it's "That was erasure, not featuring that minority actor in this episode" or "Why didn't they use trans-friendly pronouns in that law and order SVU episode."

That's a SJW. And the trend can't die soon enough.

So it's basically people who are obsessed with social justice stuff? I can see how that would get annoying.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-20 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Way to miss the point.

It's not people who obsessed. It's people who obnoxious and rude. We are all obsessed with something here, because we are fandom nerds who love our shows. But most of us know when to chill the fuck out and let it go.

Got you.

Unlike SJW's, we should be all about education.

Temp down the anger anon, it was a fair question.

Recognizing that problematic material exists is not a problem. Pointing out particularly egregious examples, or occasionally noting general problematic trends, is also not a problem.

Never talking about anything else is a problem.

Screaming discrimination where a cursory examination of the circumstances and context shows clearly that there is none, is a problem.

Dumping cartloads of shit indiscriminately on entire demographic groups (whether they be white, male, Christian, straight people, etc.) in one's zeal to defend or improve the lot of other groups, also not cool.

Calling people names and making them feel like shit because they thoughtfully, respectfully and sincerely disagree with you about some specific issue (within reason--obviously there are certain things that simply can't be defended or justified by any serious person, but with many others there's a LOT of gray area and room for debate) is a BIG problem.

Basically, the SJW's you hear people complain about are acting just as nasty and unreasonable as the privileged and/or discriminatory people they claim to oppose, but they think they're entitled to stoop to behavior they'd scream bloody murder about if "the enemy" did it because they're nominally the "good guys."

Except in my 15 years in various fandoms I've seen, like, two cases of people hoping on someone who wasn't actually being racist/sexist/homophobic and like 40 million cases where someone actually was a huge fucking racist/sexist/homophobe and maybe some of the people who called them out went to far, but Jesus fucking Christ, when it's the 20th rape joke of the day sometimes you just lose it and send a mean message.

Some of us have seen a lot more.
