FWIW, OP, my one "meet a random fandom person IRL" experience was a disaster. I'm into anime and manga and gaming fandoms, and she ... well, she was into only this one very cracky RPF thing, which was not my cuppa at all. And since she didn't even know what anime or manga were (well, other than hentai) ... after we hit that speed bump the rest of the lunch was me listening to her talk about how certain foods make her joints swell.

As I edged for the door, I realized that having the internet's buffer zone of anonymity is sometimes a blessing.
