I'm somewhat new to the fandom (on Tumblr, anyway, but that's where most of the fandom is at, so I'm obviously missing out on a lot), so would you mind explaining to me the racism in the fandom?

I personally haven't been aware of it, but then, I haven't been a part of where most of the TW activity takes place, so that's a given.

Hmm let's see if I can remember enough points.

My first introduction to the racism in the fandom was the art depicting Scott as a begging dog(not drawn as a dog, mind you, but a human sitting like a dog, with a collar/leash and sometimes drooling). This insinuates not only that he is stupid, but due to the often added effect of Derek not being depicted this way, shows not that they are making a joke of werewolves, but a probably subconscious racism that POCs should be owned like a pet no matter if they are the most important character in the show.

The blatant disregard for the actions Jackson's actor has done. Blackface/brownface/etc is probably one of the most hurtful and well used propaganda tactics in wartime to vilify POCs, and I just find it really gross that even once he became aware of the issue, he did it again and then made a "white face" costume as a sarcastic barb. And the fans completely write it off.

When you think about it, it is a rather odd phenomenon that the main character, who has a very interesting(and loved shipping trope) rivalry with Derek, an adorable canon relationship, and chemistry with many others, is... hardly at all involved in fanworks. He is quickly labeled as stupid, going so far as using "potato" which is a slur used for mentally disabled people, when in the scene where he got a low grade, it was written "Not like you!" It's obviously not the norm for him to be failing, but everyone wants to believe he is an idiot anyway.

This is getting really long so I might think of other things but I'll just post this now.

jfc that first example is incredibly stupid. People are constantly calling both Posey and his character a puppy, and it has nothing to do with race. Drawing character as a dog has nothing to do with some made up subconscious racism or wanting to own people like a pet (unless you're talking about kink, but that is a different barrel of fish alltogether).

I'm not even going to get into the ridiculous "potato is a slur!" stupidity that I've seen in this fandom.

Don't get me wrong, there is some really weird racism and sexism in this fandom and in the show, but the examples you've given are ridiculous.

How do you even get that potato isn't being used as the slur it is, when... Scott looks NOTHING like a potato? What in the world else do you think it means??

And I won't respond to the other part because I feel very strongly on that that is indeed racism, so I'd prefer to not argue about it and get upset.

...potato is an insult given to people with disabilities (potato = stupid), Sterek fans were often 'joking' that Scott isn't very clever, so they started calling him a 'potato' "fondly".

Interestingly enough, in canon Scott is supposed to be reasonably intelligent - his low grades are apparently out-of-character for him.

ayrt

I... know this? Maybe you meant to reply to the anon above me who didn't seem to understand this? Or are you that anon? I AM SO CONFUSED NOW.
That is what my comment was in regards to, the anon I replied to didn't seem to understand that potato is an insult similar to "retarded" and that it's become some fans nickname for Scott and that it makes no sense because it's completely opposite of his canon interpretation.
And the reason I consider it racist is that it is incredibly common with racism to degrade intelligence of someone and assume stupidity when there is no proof of any, and then continue to believe so even after being proved wrong.

The potato=stupid thing has ALWAYS been related to mental disabilities because it started with that stupid macro of a person with Down Syndrom and the caption "I can count to potato".

Because Scott the drooling dog needing to be lead around to find his own tail is totally a reference to his adorability wait what. I'd get it if fandom was making jokes about how Allison has him whipped, but that's not what fandom is saying.

DA.

1) What? Dude, I JUST saw a piece of fanart where Derek was naked, collared, and chained to a wall and he is white as fuck. This is so absolutely ridiculous that I can't even.

What are you going to say next? That Boyd can't be portrayed as the submissive in a Dom/sub relationship if the Dom is white because it would reflect some racist stereotype?

2) Um. So because the actor might have done something that was unintentionally racist and some fans chose to not stone him to death for it, the fandom is automatically racist? I saw the photos, and I certainly didn't like them, but I'm NOT about to go into a blind rage about it just because some SJW's think I should, or feel that the actions of a single actor reflect the entirety of a show.

3) I don't know about this potato thing so I'm not going to comment on it, but Scott IS dumb. He makes the absolute worst choices, ever. He's also not portrayed as very smart in canon (i.e., him constantly failing classes, though that probably has more to do with his new WW status than anything). I think you're conveniently leaving out the fact that Derek is almost always portrayed as a complete simpleton in fandom, and he is, as I mentioned before, WHITE. In fact, he is more blatantly called stupid or dumb than any other character, probably only second to Scott.
