But didn't the Blaise Zabini fic appear after Cassandra Claire made her (I know it's a him, but at that time the character's gender wasn't known and she made Blaise a girl) a recurring character in her Draco series?

I was only on the very periphery of the HP fandom at the time, but I ascribed the Blaise craze to the hordes of Cassandra Claire fans copying their master.
