We must be using Facebook really differently then! lol. I use it to keep in contact with people irl who I'd otherwise never talk to. I frequently engage in comment discussions on statuses and posts and make good use of the chat/PM system. On Facebook it's so easy to talk directly to other people. It's not great for forum discussions (no nesting) though occasionally I get involved in an in-depth discussion anyway (not about fandom, usually) but usually it's friendly, relatively short discussions that let me catch up with people and keep in touch. Tumblr doesn't have anything that works like that. The "image sharing" is secondary to me since I don't go to Facebook for image sharing - I guess some people do, but I find people or pages who constantly spam my feed with dumb pictures kind of annoying. Fortunately (and unlike Tumblr) it is easy to remain someone's "friend" on Facebook while unsubscribing to their posts.

Since I'm a social and people-oriented person, I don't like Tumblr as much because communication is so complicated. I just go there when I feel like looking for pretty pictures or gifsets - usually after a major update in one of my fandoms.

For me, what'll usually happen is that there are a few friends I talk to on Facebook whenever we're all at home but otherwise, I mostly use it to loosely keep track of other people's posts and statuses and such. Though you are right in that it's much easier to comment and talk on Facebook than on Tumblr. Tumblr is kind of its own bizarre category of trying to do a lot of things and ultimately sucking at just about all of them. I just figure that on the spectrum of a journal site vs a social networking site, it's a lot closer to the latter than the former, though obviously it isn't exactly like either one.

And I pretty much use Tumblr the same way you do - I'll go look at pretty gifs and pictures if the need strikes but otherwise I don't go there - I only visit about once or twice a week, tops, and it boggles my mind how people can spend all day on there - I mean, what do you even do...?! At least on Facebook, as mindboggling as it is, there are things like games and stuff that can understandably keep people occupied, but how it works on Tumblr is beyond me.
