Re: Giving money to strangers

If it's something where someone needs a dollar for a vending machine, or bus fare, I'll usually give them something if I have the cash/change on me to spare. Occasionally when I'm in the library at school, I'll have someone ask me for a dollar bill so they can pay to print something out, and if I have one, I'll give it to them and won't expect anything in return.

A couple times, I've given to a total stranger who claimed an emergency, but I'm more cautious, and it depends on what they're asking for. I don't worry too much about being swindled for a few dollars, but if someone is asking for more, I'm not comfortable doing it unless I trust them. If I feel safe, I'd rather offer practical help, like letting someone make a call on my phone, or things like that.

With homeless people who ask for money, I don't give because I don't want to be continually asked for money when I walk those routes. I feel guilty about it, though.

I'm not really comfortable taking my wallet out in front of strangers who are asking me for money. How safe I feel when approached by someone depends a lot on the time and environment. A busy sidewalk? I don't feel too threatened. A quiet sidewalk? A little uncomfortable. A quiet parking lot in the middle of the night? Very uncomfortable.
