Re: Giving money to strangers

I work at a homeless shelter, so I've had to learn the hard way how to say "no". If it's someone I know from work and they're trying to get on the bus and are short a little, I'll usually help out.

OTOH if they want money for food I just tell them that I'll see them when I get to work, and to make sure to stop by, and I'll tell them of other places they can get a free meal until we open for the day. I know that answer is a little passive-aggressive, because I'm well aware they already know the information I'm giving them. But the fact that they're asking means they definitely want the money for something else, and I'm not going to be a part of that.
