A huge part of fanfic (and fanworks in general) has always been to take characters and things in directions that the source material didn't. Why do you think shipping is such a big thing? Or what-ifs and alternate universes? Sure, plenty of people enjoy trying to replicate the look or tone of their canon, but for many others, if they wanted more of the same they'd just re-read/re-watch/re-play the original content.
