A huge part of fanfic (and fanworks in general) has always been to take characters and things in directions that the source material didn't. Why do you think shipping is such a big thing? Or what-ifs and alternate universes? Sure, plenty of people enjoy trying to replicate the look or tone of their canon, but for many others, if they wanted more of the same they'd just re-read/re-watch/re-play the original content.

I'm curious about what exactly is meant by "history feels", and what about them is offensive. Besides the "feels", anyway.

A lot of people like to do fanfics with the characters going into how the premise of the comics would work in those events.

Sometimes they are very well done, and respectful of the issues and events that took place. Sometimes they aren't, and show a definite bias. There are some pairings that actually have a reputation for being the later [most notably Rus/Ame concerning...pretty much everything related the Cold War, iirc].

Thing is, at least in the parts of fandom I've been in, people who do the latter tend to get called out for it, and it's strongly frowned on to do it .

A lot of people get into fandom because they want something they know they can't get from canon. For some it's shipping, for others it's certain kind of character development, for others resurrecting a dead character, for others coffee shop AUs etc. Hetalia gives us a bunch of characters who, despite being silly, are intriguing and make you curious about how they'd act in a more serious setting. Combine that with a premise that allows you to explore any period in history and any place in the world with relative ease, and there you have it.

I like my Hetalia fanworks with a balance of humor and a more serious side. The super grim dark epics that make everyone OOC for the sake of history don't interest me, but neither do the crack fics or humor fanart that have the exact same tone as canon.
cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (eeeeeeehhhhhh)

Not turning war kawaii?

That. No. How about you start with the title and work down from there.

...I think it says a lot about you that you think that just because a fic is serious then it must be "pretentious bullshit". Guess what? Fanfic comes in all varieties, even when the fandom doesn't match the style. I've read all types of Hetalia fic and have found gems in all genres; shippy, crack, dark, funny, fluffy, and yes, even the "pretentious bullshit" serious ones.

If you notice, whilst Hetalia does tend towards the fun side, it does also have serious sides to it too (America's Storage Cleaning). So to say that serious stuff isn't staying true to the original is just stupid.

I'm trying to figure what do you mean by serious. Do you mean serious as in making a fic serious, but taking the characterization and making it completely OOC? Or Serious as in taking a silly character but making a serious fic about that character? Because JFen has done their quota of serious stuff along with silly ones. Also the comic touches on serious stuff, like the comic strip about the policeman and France. Or old ones like Bloody Sunday.

I think you're glorifying Japanese fandom a bit. They do a ton of really squicky shit and sometimes they're even less sensitive. There is a lot of pretty offensive stuff over there. Series like Hakka Pink's Independence Sky, which is popular in both W and J fandom, are pretty offensive in my view. Yumeuta's big 'magnum opus' (my mind slips on the title) was almost as tasteless to me as some of the worst of Western fandom. I'm a huge doujinshi collector, and I've had to dig through probably hundreds of overly serious attempts at pretentiousness with yandere characterization, dub-con, the whole nine yards to find books that I want. There's plenty of it in both W and J fandom.

That being said, at least in fandom in the past couple of years, I've found that AUs are actually the most popular.

Also there's quite a bit of serious fic that isn't 'pretentious bullshit'. I actually enjoy a good serious fic, although out and out dark fic isn't personally my thing.

Not OP

I'm kind of wondering if the OP isn't referring to things like 'THE COLD WAR/AMERICAN REVOLUTION/-INSERT WAR HERE- WAS JUST SEXUAL TENSION, GUYS!' 'Cause that...is pretty damn tasteless, and you don't really see much of that kind of stuff making it over from the J fandom. But that's just what I'm getting from the ~historical feels~ bit ^^;;

What happened in Independence Sky again? I only looked at like...the first one without a translation because *damn* the art was awesome.

I... suddenly I want to know what those people would do with the American Civil War. Oh, dear. That would be horrible.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Wasn't Hetalia all about making fun of stereotypes?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh please. Japanese fandom isn't as good as you think it is. Have you read any doujin? As someone has commented above, 5 volumes of glorious trainwreck that are Independence Sky. It starts okay, but then everything becomes pretty bullshit when you realised just how fucked up it is.

You see, you think Japanese fandom looks better since you don't get to see Japanese fanworks a lot. I'm not claiming I've actually seen many aside from doujin, but heck, a few of the doujinshi can be pretty alarming in itself. Who knows what kind of fanfics they produce in Japan there.

And turning an original work into something ~darker and edgier and angstier~ has always been a common practice in fandom, you know. Not trying to defend it in anyway; my main fandom (which original work is very light-hearted) is also heavily loaded with this bullshit.
