I think you're glorifying Japanese fandom a bit. They do a ton of really squicky shit and sometimes they're even less sensitive. There is a lot of pretty offensive stuff over there. Series like Hakka Pink's Independence Sky, which is popular in both W and J fandom, are pretty offensive in my view. Yumeuta's big 'magnum opus' (my mind slips on the title) was almost as tasteless to me as some of the worst of Western fandom. I'm a huge doujinshi collector, and I've had to dig through probably hundreds of overly serious attempts at pretentiousness with yandere characterization, dub-con, the whole nine yards to find books that I want. There's plenty of it in both W and J fandom.

That being said, at least in fandom in the past couple of years, I've found that AUs are actually the most popular.

Also there's quite a bit of serious fic that isn't 'pretentious bullshit'. I actually enjoy a good serious fic, although out and out dark fic isn't personally my thing.

I'm kind of wondering if the OP isn't referring to things like 'THE COLD WAR/AMERICAN REVOLUTION/-INSERT WAR HERE- WAS JUST SEXUAL TENSION, GUYS!' 'Cause that...is pretty damn tasteless, and you don't really see much of that kind of stuff making it over from the J fandom. But that's just what I'm getting from the ~historical feels~ bit ^^;;

What happened in Independence Sky again? I only looked at like...the first one without a translation because *damn* the art was awesome.
