Oh please. Japanese fandom isn't as good as you think it is. Have you read any doujin? As someone has commented above, 5 volumes of glorious trainwreck that are Independence Sky. It starts okay, but then everything becomes pretty bullshit when you realised just how fucked up it is.

You see, you think Japanese fandom looks better since you don't get to see Japanese fanworks a lot. I'm not claiming I've actually seen many aside from doujin, but heck, a few of the doujinshi can be pretty alarming in itself. Who knows what kind of fanfics they produce in Japan there.

And turning an original work into something ~darker and edgier and angstier~ has always been a common practice in fandom, you know. Not trying to defend it in anyway; my main fandom (which original work is very light-hearted) is also heavily loaded with this bullshit.
