now that you bring it up i wonder that too OP. if i look at the cosplayers that do get mocked, its usually a combo of both + bad hygiene + bad costumes

whereas the bigger cosplayers with great costumes who look good in what they are wearing get a lot of "but her outfit and hair and everything else is great, what are all of you moaning about, grow up"

I have to agree. The people who have put serious effort into their costumes and have chosen their character with a sense of humor (for example Ursula, Barf from Spaceballs), don't attract anywhere near the same amount of ridicule as someone who is dressed in a badly fitting outfit of Felicia from Darkstalkers. In those cases it's just bitching from the usual assholes who will attack anyone.

Oh, come on, anon. I don't cosplay, but even I can see that this is a ridiculous argument. How many fat characters are there out there? How many that aren't a joke? Maybe someone wants to dress up as a character without being a walking commentary on their own weight and don't want to cosplay with a sense of humor.

The serious effort part, I agree with you on, but don't tell people what they have to dress as.

Look, and I'm saying this as a large person: if you aren't willing to alter the outfit in such a way that the costume actually fits, you should not go outside dressed as that character and not expect people to say something. If you can deal with people saying something and not give a fuck, more power to you, but it will happen.

Cosplay clothes are not some kind of special category. They are still clothes. If I go outside in short shorts and a bare midriff I fully expect jerks talking behind my back. Adding a ponytail and calling myself Lara Croft changes nothing.

I'd still do Lara Croft, but I'd change her outfit.

No, I'm not going to tell people what to dress as, but if you are going put on something that is basically a fluffy bikini that wouldn't flatter most thin people and take yourself seriously, I'm going to snigger behind your back.

Other people have commented on the same in this thread, but it is possible to modify outfits to fit your body type instead of making an exact copy that won't look good on you at all.

I think it depends on if you're talking about people who get mocked by cosplay-is-serious-business douchebags, or other douchebags.

Douchebags who cosplay and are serious about cosplay tend to think it's okay to mock people who wear bad cosplay, but will usually come to the defenses of fat cosplayers if their costumes are good.

Random douchebags who stumble upon cosplayers are likely to make comments like "Looks like Sailor Moon really let herself go!" or "Look at that fat Sakura, lol!" with no regard to whether or not the costume looks good. Depending on whether or not these douchebags are nerds themselves or if it's Halloween, they may or may not make fun of cosplayers in general, but they don't usually pay attention to how well done the cosplay is.
