fat =/= ugly. try again.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you actually read the secret. I don't think you did.

that was OP's point... that other people are mixing the two

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Srsly, check yo logic.

All fat people are ugly, but not all ugly people are fat.

The OP seemed to acknowledge that though. The secret says something about fat girls being split between ones with pretty faces and ones who are ugly.

now that you bring it up i wonder that too OP. if i look at the cosplayers that do get mocked, its usually a combo of both + bad hygiene + bad costumes

whereas the bigger cosplayers with great costumes who look good in what they are wearing get a lot of "but her outfit and hair and everything else is great, what are all of you moaning about, grow up"

This obsession with classifying everyone's physical attractiveness is very sad. Am I the only one who thinks so? This assumption that pretty=valuable has shown up in a few secrets lately...

I don't see how that would make it any more acceptable. Unkindness is unkindness, no matter what the excuse. Just because someone doesn't meet your standards of attractiveness doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to pursue their hobby or that it's OK to mock them if they do.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
More than once in my life, I've met/worked/been friends with an ugly person.

Some of them were pretty awesome, others were mediocre, some were pretty shitty. As are all people.

Do we really need to do a round of "ugly people are people too". ffs. Ugly people, however you chose to define that, has as much right to put on whatever they want and have fun in whatever way they want. If you find the sight of them so offensive you ~have the power~ of looking the fuck away.

PEOPLE AREN'T MAKING FUN OF YOU BECAUSE YOU'RE UGLY AND OVERWEIGHT. YOUR COSTUME IS TERRIBLE, AND IT WOULD BE TERRIBLE IF IT WAS ON SOMEONE 5'8 AND 115 LBS.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it should boil down to, is the cosplay itself any good? Are the costumes accurate to the show/character? How about the construction? Does it look like they took a serious amount of time in putting the outfit(s) together, or does the whole thing look like a four year old tossed some glitter an macaroni noodles on fabric, then called it a day?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
What I don't understand, from a feminist viewpoint, is why the word "ugly" is the worst slur in the history of the universe. More and more I'm seeing "fat is beautiful", "my little sister gets bullied at school for being chubby, tell her she's beautiful", "all women are beautiful".

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, yes, but this insistence that women must be beautiful is frankly terrifying. It's never "my little sister gets bullied at school tell her how creative/intelligent/worthy of a person she is", it's "tell her she's beautiful". It just, as per the unfortunate usual, strips a woman's worth down to her physical appearance, and now it's other women that are enforcing it.

Forgive the mini rant, I just feel like this is something that really needs to be addressed.

Those silly people! They just don't realize that everyone has all the right to make fun of them because they're fucking ugly! It's their own fault for picking those genes, after all! :)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
And I wonder how much is people really being mean, and how much is simply people saying frankly, "Look, it's a nice effort, but you just don't have the body to pull that one off convincingly."

Speaking as a fat person who used to cosplay way back before it was called cosplay, I still don't get why it's automatically considered mean to tell someone that a particular costume just doesn't work well with their body type.

To me it's no different than saying something like, "No, Andre the Giant, I'm very sorry, but I just don't think you'd have much luck as a horse jockey." Because he wouldn't have, even if a horse could be found that could carry the man, and he'd have looked ludicrous trying. It would be meaner to get someone's hopes up in a situation like that than to just tell the truth and offer to help them find something that worked better for them.

There's a difference between acknowledging an obvious physical reality, even if it's an unpalatable one, and mocking or belittling someone because of it.

I didn't read the secret beyond the first few words and I don't really care what it says or whether or not you're trolling, OP, I'm just happy you posted it 'cause damn there are some really great gifs in this thread.

Wow. And here I thought fandom was supposed to be about having fun. Silly me!

OP, you're quite the killjoy, aren't you?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think if someone is making fun of someone for being fat, they're making fun of someone for being fat. If you're confused, examine the wording of their comments and try to decide if it would relate more to size of appearance.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
Because making fun of someone because they don't meet your standard of attractiveness is somehow better or more acceptable than making fun of them because they are overweight? It really isn't.
