One of these days I'll actually give a damn about GTA4 enough to play the DLC. But damn if it doesn't hold up well at all to the older games, particularly Vice City Stories.

The Ballad of Gay Tony is far better than GTA4 proper. Just play it as a stand alone.

THIS. Both DLC for GTA4 are better than the main story - Ballad especially so; they improved some gameplay mechanics and introduced some great new stuff, as well as it being a good story.
