Ignoring the "no pro writers" shit; I just want to say, as a fanartist it really fucking bothers me when idiots say shit like this. Fanfiction is fucking amazing. For most fanartists, the art we draw is just simple, quick fun shit that gets a lot of attention because it's easier to say "WOW!" at a picture than a 5k fic. But writers put so much time and soul into what they write. I could never do that and I hate this attitude so many people take that fanfic is creepy or not as difficult to produce. That's complete bullshit.

Exactly. Fic rules, art drools. SEE, OP, someone agrees with you!

Just kidding... but seriously, as someone who can't draw anything beyond stick figures I am sure (more complex) art takes practice and editing, too. I mean, I understand if it's a quick doodle or whatever, but I have a huge amount of respect for fanartists, so don't denigrate yourself, anon :)

Aww I know, I just meant that on the level where an art piece isn't very detailed, like a doodle, or even just something done in a few hours, it's about on the same level as like a 5k-10k fic for most writers.
When it comes to like big bang level, epic chaptered fics or just amazing prose, I feel it's on the same level as those hugely detailed art pieces.

Both need prior experience to really pull off well, both need talent and dedication. But on the quicker, just-for-fun level, art is a lot easier to view and gain attention and praise for.

and so is snapshot fanfics at the just-for-fun level. Neither medium is somehow more work or better than the other, they both have levels of complexity, time, dedication, fun versus seriousness.

Art is not that much easier to view and get attention for. Both depend on your skill levels, the fandom, the subject matter. A quick for fun fic can get more or less attention than a quick for fun art depending on those...and sheer dumb luck on who sees and shares it.

/the disgruntled fanartist and ficwriter.

To be totally pedantic--art generally is "easier to view." That's why at conventions, if you're looking for work and you're an artist, you can get a portfolio review from just about anyone behind a table at Artist Alley, but if you're a writer, you've got to...I don't know, schmooze, I guess? That's what I see most writers doing--talking and making connections and possibly getting to a pitch. But you can look at a page for all of five seconds and tell the skill level of the artist, while reading script, prose, fic, what-have-you, takes a bit longer--even judging the quality is a lot harder to do on knee-jerk reaction.

But yeah, in general fandom, it's true. Firstly, that quick, derpy art makes the rounds pretty well (usually better than any of the stuff I actually put effort into...), and that ease-of-consumption depends on what the viewer/reader is in the mood for--epic artwork or chaptered fic, or a quick fluffy snapshot.
