Re: Appropriation
(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)What about american rock music? Elvis etc becoming wildly popular singing and playing what was previously "black music", while failing to challenge all the cultural and economic barriers to black people making a similar living off of their music.
I know it's an old one, but if that's not appropriation I don't know what is.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)Seriously. I post anon so I can get my stupid opinions torn apart before I admit to them publicly. It's a good system.

Re: Appropriation
(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 05:13 am (UTC)(link)Maybe it is. We all have to start somewhere. It's not like I'm trolling.
Re: Appropriation
Re: Appropriation
I might be getting anons confused, though.
Re: Appropriation
(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)And I wasn't going for trolling or think that the Fighting Irish have it bad, by the way. I just wanted to see how the original OP would separate the two.

If several anonymous posters are involved in the same discussion, things can get confusing. Starting your post with "Anon you replied to" (AYRT), "Same anon" (SA), "Not the anon you replied to" (NAYRT) or "Different anon" DA can help a lot.
But when someone talks about "OP", they generally means the person who made the very first post and started the whole discussion.
Re: Appropriation
(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)The way I understand appropriation in a non-sjw sense is that appropriation can actually take a cultural practice away/make it inaccessible to actual members of that culture, and that's what makes it harmful. I'm pretty sure there's discussion about that within music history. Although obviously, there really isn't and shouldn't be a way of stopping influences in art.
