Re: Tumblr

You're not the only one.

My tumblr dash is just fine, but I mostly follow people for the pretty pictures, so I guess I'm one of those "hipster bloggers".

That being said... I DO think tumblr's nature makes it easy for it to become a kind of "echo chamber" for people who have very weird opinions, and kind of dislocate them from reality. See: otherkin, transethnics, the REALLY intense fringes of fandom.

I even got this effect myself! I used to follow a lot more "social issue" blogs since I have an interest in working with people. But it started to make me focus a lot on my own problems, and I started feeling really awful about myself. And whenever I left tumblr I'd feel a little surprised that people's opinions IRL weren't as understanding as online.

The lesson: It all depends on who you surround yourself with. I still follow some "issue" blogs - mainly the few that are positive and make me feel good.
