(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)For me, shipping against a fandom-wide OTP feels kind of like having a dairy allergy and going to a potluck where it seems as if every single person has brought cream of broccoli soup or lasagna or cheesecake or tiramisu or etc. And I'm just hanging out there with my pot of chili, which I enjoy, but it's a potluck! It would be nice to eat something that I hadn't made myself. And meanwhile everyone else is talking about how delicious the spanakopita is, even if you don't usually like spanakopita you absolutely have to try it; and oh, wow, someone brought fondue, isn't that fun?! And occasionally someone will try a bowl of the chili I brought and compliment me on it, but I know that at the next potluck, that person will be bringing another homemade macaroni and cheese, just as she did this time.
At a certain point, doing my own thing stops being fun--which is all the more noticeable because everyone around me is having the most! fun! ever!--so even though I'll keep watching the show every week, I disengage from the fandom.
