Wait, so you wanna ship something that other people like so that you can be a part of a group?

I won't say that you're doing it wrong, but...ouch. I always ship whatever I want; I ship couples I think will work out, especially if they have really interesting dynamics. This has dumped me into sections of fandom that are tiny sometimes, and other times, I end up shipping something that everyone else loves, too.

Ain't no thaaaang. I enjoy being a shipper--the pairing doesn't have to be popular for me to love my ship.

That said, obviously that's why this is a secret. Hope you can just enjoy your pairings because you like them someday, OP. :)

Hmm... well, there are advantages to being part of the big ships... more fanworks, more people to squee with, less likely to get jumped on and screamed at for doing it wrong.

That being said, you're right. Everyone should just ship or not ship what they like without having to worry about that stuff.

It would be nice to have all that fic and art though...

There's also nothing wrong with having your cake and eating it, too. I don't ship either of the 'big' pairings in Supernatural - S/D and D/C - but I've read loads of fanfic for both of them because there are so many good writers producing stuff.

(For my actual preferred pairings - Dean/Bela and Cas/Anna - I'll take what I can get, even though the lack of sheer volume means there are fewer real gems.)

The only time this method falls through is when I dislike a character in the pairing; then I usually can't enjoy it at all. But as long as I like both characters as individuals, them being together doesn't bother me even if I don't ship them.

I doubt you are still reading this thread, as I'm here way late, but in case you track it or something...

For my actual preferred pairings - Dean/Bela and Cas/Anna - I'll take what I can get, even though the lack of sheer volume means there are fewer real gems.

Do you have any recs for those gems? Especially Bela ones? I like the potential in her character, but obviously haven't found much in fandom.

Happily :)

My favorite Dean/Bela fic is 'Last Watch of Hero'; author doesn't keep a masterlist, so links to all chapters:

It's unfinished, but still good enough that I go back to read it again and again.

Bela crackfic, very good - as this author always is.

'Be Gone With It': http://lazy-daze.livejournal.com/432620.html
Sam/Dean/Bela PWP.

Bellatemple has at least a couple full-cast crackfics that have Bela in a major role; check out 'Kiss Me, Son of God' and 'Siriusly' on her masterlist: http://bellatemple.livejournal.com/193140.html

For Anna, I highly recommend these three; nothing blatantly shippy between Cas and Anna, but an amazing view of their relationship none the less:

Cas/Anna in the Croatverse.

What Anna went through when she started hearing the angels; technically D/C at the end, but the primary focus is on her.

And as a bonus, how about some Bela/Anna?

Thank you so much! I've read the crack fics, but I look forward to the rest. :D

Enjoy! Fans of the SN girls have to stick together, after all ;)

I ship what I want to ship, but I also tend to stay in fandoms longer if my OTP is popular within the fandom or, at the very least, if the fandom is big on multishipping.

For me, shipping against a fandom-wide OTP feels kind of like having a dairy allergy and going to a potluck where it seems as if every single person has brought cream of broccoli soup or lasagna or cheesecake or tiramisu or etc. And I'm just hanging out there with my pot of chili, which I enjoy, but it's a potluck! It would be nice to eat something that I hadn't made myself. And meanwhile everyone else is talking about how delicious the spanakopita is, even if you don't usually like spanakopita you absolutely have to try it; and oh, wow, someone brought fondue, isn't that fun?! And occasionally someone will try a bowl of the chili I brought and compliment me on it, but I know that at the next potluck, that person will be bringing another homemade macaroni and cheese, just as she did this time.

At a certain point, doing my own thing stops being fun--which is all the more noticeable because everyone around me is having the most! fun! ever!--so even though I'll keep watching the show every week, I disengage from the fandom.
