Wait, so you wanna ship something that other people like so that you can be a part of a group?

I won't say that you're doing it wrong, but...ouch. I always ship whatever I want; I ship couples I think will work out, especially if they have really interesting dynamics. This has dumped me into sections of fandom that are tiny sometimes, and other times, I end up shipping something that everyone else loves, too.

Ain't no thaaaang. I enjoy being a shipper--the pairing doesn't have to be popular for me to love my ship.

That said, obviously that's why this is a secret. Hope you can just enjoy your pairings because you like them someday, OP. :)

Hmm... well, there are advantages to being part of the big ships... more fanworks, more people to squee with, less likely to get jumped on and screamed at for doing it wrong.

That being said, you're right. Everyone should just ship or not ship what they like without having to worry about that stuff.

It would be nice to have all that fic and art though...

I ship what I want to ship, but I also tend to stay in fandoms longer if my OTP is popular within the fandom or, at the very least, if the fandom is big on multishipping.

For me, shipping against a fandom-wide OTP feels kind of like having a dairy allergy and going to a potluck where it seems as if every single person has brought cream of broccoli soup or lasagna or cheesecake or tiramisu or etc. And I'm just hanging out there with my pot of chili, which I enjoy, but it's a potluck! It would be nice to eat something that I hadn't made myself. And meanwhile everyone else is talking about how delicious the spanakopita is, even if you don't usually like spanakopita you absolutely have to try it; and oh, wow, someone brought fondue, isn't that fun?! And occasionally someone will try a bowl of the chili I brought and compliment me on it, but I know that at the next potluck, that person will be bringing another homemade macaroni and cheese, just as she did this time.

At a certain point, doing my own thing stops being fun--which is all the more noticeable because everyone around me is having the most! fun! ever!--so even though I'll keep watching the show every week, I disengage from the fandom.

Carter/Reese is still pretty popular, isn't it? I don't delve into the fandom side of Person of Interest much so I'm not sure how much fic there is, but I always see fans of the pairing on tumblr.

I feel weird about shipping POC at all. IDK why, I don't with anything else. (I like Reese/Finch regardless though.)

Carter/Reese is totally popular. But it's still not the primary pairing, so I get the OP's wah.

It's nice to ship the primary ship, especially in a small fandom. I would say to the OP, though, that Carter/Reesers are *awesome* and seem to adore their pairing on tumblr. Also, there is this site, that has a lot of dedicated Carter/Reesers:

Awww, I feel you anon. I'm the same way, and then I get pissy when fans of really popular ships whine. What, you don't like Sherlock/John genderswap? Well, it isn't as if you have literally 10,000 other fics to choose from!

I recently had a passing interest in a ship in the biggest fandom I've ever been near. Even though it wasn't crazy popular, because of the sheer size of the fandom, it had so many fics! I wish I pinged with fandoms and pairings like that all the time!

Aw, but PoI fandom is pretty friendly and loves all the ships. Some more than others, yes, but they still love them ♥

Also also multishipping. You can still be a part of the crowd! Unless you don't ship Rinch. But you can still friendship them! Or something. Come on just have fun with us anyways D:

I swear I watched like three episodes in the middle of this season (including the one where they were stranded on the island during the storm) and until they brought up Finch's ex-wife (of whomever she was) I swear I thought Reese and Finch were in some weird codependent romantic relationship.

I do friendship them! They're adorable together .. just not in a "omg I ship them" sort of way.

And once I finish watching all the PoI episodes to date, I'll get more into the fandom. Glad to find out it's friendly! ♥

Recs?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Handy POI multishipping thread is handy! Anyone got any of the rarer pair recs?

I've read exactly one Finch/Carter fic (Sunlight (http://archiveofourown.org/works/649871) by faith_manages. Which is awesome, by the by). Is this the only one in existence for this pair?

And does anyone know of any Finch/Zoe? Carter/Zoe? Fusco/anyone? (Nathan/Zoe, was I the only one who wanted that? Or Joss Carter/Cara Stanton back when Carter was military? Or Fusco/Finch, is that wrong? That's probably wrong.)

I love Rinch. I just also sort of love everyone else, too.

I envy your experience of PoI fandom, my general experience is that PoI fans tend to be malicious, elitist hatemongers. I've also observed an unfortunate prevalence of racism and sexism, especially directed at Carter.

A big crowd of shippers usually means a bigger amount of fanworks to consume - which is what makes me want to ship the popular pairings often enough. Well, "makes me want to" doesn't mean it works out for me, somehow I tend to go for the rare pairings more often than not - and leaves me yearning for fanfic/fanart.

So I'm always kind of relieved if I happen to like a popular pairing. *g*

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

For me it's also about the amount of fanworks. Also sometimes it's a bit lonely if you ship something rare and have no-one to get excited over it with.

I finally finished MASH and was all excited to get into fanfics, and then well Hawkeye/Trapper* is nowhere near as big of a shit as I thought it would be, Hawkeye/BJ is where the actions at, and well I can ship both pairings, but I really do prefer Trapper over BJ so I was kinda sad.

Also it is probably the second time in my life where I haven't shipped what the majority ships so it is a new experience for me. So I feel your pain OP!

*Anyone know of any good fanfics? I found like two that where good and a couple more that I enjoyed...

I went through my M*A*S*H recs, and sadly none are Hawkeye/Trapper, but here's a link just in case; I think there's some good stories recced here, but YMMV.

http://lunabee34.dreamwidth.org/tag/recs:+mash

I'm assuming you checked AO3, so here's the link to the M*A*S*H section of the old Yuletide archive before it moved to AO3:

http://yuletidetreasure.org/archive/fandom_mash_tv.html

Looks like there's at least one Trapper/Hawkeye fic there (the old archive doesn't list pairings, so it's hard to tell; sorry)

I almost always end up shipping the "wrong" pairings in all of my fandoms. I either end up having to really hunt down fanworks for them or create them myself.

I don't entirely mind because I've found some amazing friends through those fandoms and pairings, but sometimes I wonder why I can never seem to get it "right".

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
There's also nothing wrong with having your cake and eating it, too. I don't ship either of the 'big' pairings in Supernatural - S/D and D/C - but I've read loads of fanfic for both of them because there are so many good writers producing stuff.

(For my actual preferred pairings - Dean/Bela and Cas/Anna - I'll take what I can get, even though the lack of sheer volume means there are fewer real gems.)

The only time this method falls through is when I dislike a character in the pairing; then I usually can't enjoy it at all. But as long as I like both characters as individuals, them being together doesn't bother me even if I don't ship them.

This happens to me all the time. Or, take the Sherlock Holmes fandom (movies here), I end up shipping the opposite top/bottom thing. Like...when I was last involved, it was mostly Watson/Holmes. That's how it ALWAYS ended up in fic. But I preferred Holmes/Watson.

Not quite the same, but yeah.

I think the closest recently was Kirk/Bones (popular, i know, but not that much before hand). I went into the new movie expecting to ship the fandom's grandaddy of all slash....but did not. Felt kind of "damn..." at first, but then it did get popular.

Other ships include Harry/Luna, Kakashi/Sakura, and I'm blanking on others right now (came back from a con, so brain is mush).
