Depending on your definition of "lose it" you should probably get a grip, OP.

Things end.

...Oh. Well, you're lovely.

This comment is probably why it's a fandom SECRET, chard. People keep things secret so other people won't think they need to get a grip (or whatever).

To be fair "lose it" could just mean "cry a lot" and...crying a lot is a pretty normal reaction for some people reacting to sad things in fandom.

I think it's sad that OP can't bring themself to watch finales, but that's their choice. "Get a grip" is a bit harsh imo.

Possibly in OP's defense, I'm pretty bad with endings myself, and I know I've avoided watching or readings things that I know have sad endings just because of that fact. This isn't because I can't handle sad things happening in IRL, which I actually deal with better than most people I know. I think it's more because I already feel things deeply, and there are already enough depressing things happening in the world that I don't particularly want to add sadness over a fictional death to that list in my head.

Dude, I cried at the series finale of freakin' FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR.

I would never not watch an ending though. I have to know how things end. :\a

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you do for movies? Walk out?

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Movies aren't on the same level for me as long-running TV series. 2 hours in a theater is not long enough for me to get emotionally invested in the characters lives... with exceptions for things like Harry Potter, for example. I know how it ends (I read the books), but I can't see it happen on screen, so I never watched the last film.

The one time I nearly didn't finish a series was Pushing Daisies. It took me way too long to watch that finale.

While I do finish shows, sometimes it takes me a bit to watch the finale. Especially for shows that have been off air for awhile, which is strange. I'm fine with watching finales on TV, but once I have a boxset in my hands, watching a finale feels more definite to me :/

I've never seen the endings of Xena or Stargate: Universe. I have some sort of mental block for SGU, I own them all on DVD and somehow can never bring myself to watch to the end. I guess I figure if I don't see it, it's not over?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I usually can watch finales but sometimes when I do rewatches I don't watch them again so I can just pretend the adventures keep going.

The only time I consciously didn't watch a finale was with House, once Wilson got sick I was just like "NOPE". I read about the finale and heard it was good, but I like to pretend he got magically cured or something.

I always put off watching finales or playing/reading endings because I just don't want good stories to be over. And sometimes I put it off too much and never finish...

I actually wish that all the people who feel that characters are entitled to happy endings would do the same thing.

I like most finales, but I get that feel, bro. I put off watching the TFA finale for months. I still haven't gotten around to watching the last episode of Pushing Daisies, or reading the final book of Y: The Last Man.

I'm not sure if I should recommend The Angels Take Manhattan (Doctor Who) or not, OP. On the one hand, it's specifically about endings and being able to say goodbye. On the other hand, I cried for like twenty minutes...

(Shut up okay I'm a wuss.)

Poor OP. I couldn't imagine doing that. I have to watch the endings of things I really like, even when things start going to shit way before the end. That way I get really good ideas of where to fuck with everything in fanfic so my fave characters can have the endings I wanted them to.

Yes, this! I only do that with stupid, ambiguous or disproportionately sad endings. Animorphs, looking at you. The end of #54 never happened, right?

Idk, I can't do that if I'm actually invested in a show/movie/comic. I have to know how things resolve themselves. I mean, if I end up losing interest it's one thing, but I can't deliberately skip finales.

Oh, I do this too sometimes - I hate endings so much I'll stop reading a book part of the way through, or when I start to really enjoy a tv series, I'll suddenly not want to watch it because I'll want it to last forever and I know it won't.

I don't really 'lose it' at sad ones, but goodbyes and endings of things you love just suck.
la_petite_singe: (Default)

[personal profile] la_petite_singe 2013-03-25 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean. :\ They're either sad because it's hard to say goodbye, or sad because they suck and don't do the series justice and/or retcon and change stuff from the overall show, or all of the above. Alas.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-25 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
There are definitely a few finales that I wish I had never seen - hello, In Plain Sight! so I get this...

[personal profile] crazed_delusion 2013-03-25 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah the entire last season do IPS does not exist for me.

There are a lot of shows I prefer to pretend the end doesn't exist but I usually have to watch them, the pretend it didn't happen.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-25 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
Finales can be tough, especially for series that you are really emotionally invested in. I myself put off watching the finale for Avatar the Last Airbender until a few months ago. I'd skimmed through the wikipedia article, I knew basically what happened - but I wasn't quite ready to make that last journey with the series until then.
